If You See One Documentary This Year...

...make it this one!

'The People Vs George Lucas' has made a splash on the internet, due, perhaps, to the global domination of Star Wars. One wonders, actually, if George had just gone on to a different movie after his big hit, American Graffiti.

Imagine, say, if Howard the Duck had been a hit? (imagine!) We'd all be fluffing about with wise-cracking, cigar-smoking ducks, and complaining about how in the second trilogy a mallard called Ka Ka Klinks ruined it for everyone...

Still, that's an alternate reality. We'll go back there some other day.

In a recent interview with Sci Fi Wire whilst promoting his appearance on Smallville as Hawkman, Dr Daniel Jackson (a.k.a. the actor Michael Shanks) let slip that he wasn't too confident in the future of the Stargate DVD movies, even though Ark of Truth and Continuum were big successes.

Here's what he had to say:

"Given the amount of time lag that's gone on between us doing the movies, I suspect that we might be very far away from, if ever, doing another DVD movie. This might be the closing of the book on that particular franchise."

When the gangs take over the highway...
...Remember he's on your side.

In a couple of weeks Sydneysiders will have the chance to see the classic Aussie Apocalyptic Sci Fi Sensation (A.A.S.F.S.) Mad Max as it kicks the Australian Film Festival. Dr George Miller's classic film is basically one of the building blocks of Australian film. If you haven't seen it, you're yet to be truly called a Sci Fi fan, a film fan, or an Australian. For thirty years, this movie held a record in The Guinness Book of Records as the highest profit-to-cost ratio of a motion picture ever, conceding only in 2009 to Paranormal Activity.

What's On This Week Feb 8 - 14

It's a week of new beginnings and final endings. It's a week of high drama, crushed hopes and soaring dreams. It's a week where two shows end, one begins and Valentine's Day descends upon us.

Are your loins girded? Let's begin!

The big news for all SCI FI fans this week is of course the monster appearance of Sanctuary, Season Two!

The Feature-length premiere is on Thursday the 11th at 8.30pm

If you miss it, you can catch it again on Saturday the 13th at midday.

The now 158 year old Dr. Magnus continues her desperate search for Ashley, who is still held prisoner by the Cabal. Or has Ashley turned all together? With the Cabal set to unleash Lazarus and turn the worlds of normals and abnormals against each other, it's a race against the clock to avoid a supernatural apocalypse. It's gripping, heart-wrenching stuff.

Scriptsales at Cinematical is reporting that the people behind Paranormal Activity and the people behind Saw will join forces for their next film.

Oren Pel, director and producer of Paranormal Activity, alongside writers Jason Blum and Steven Schneider, have a five picture deal with Alliance Films. Their mandate - low budget genre pics. So far so good. What's the first cab off the rank? Insidious - from none other than James Wan and Leigh Whannell, the Aussie duo who created the Saw franchise which will hit number seven come Halloween 2010 (around the same time that the Paranormal Activity sequel comes out!).

The Week in Geek Issue #1

Welcome readers!

What’s this? I hear you think. We’re a weekly newsletter that does our best to keep you up to date with what’s going on in the worlds of sci fi, fantasy and geekdom in general.

Now then, onto business!

First off: I’m hoping you can help me. You see, there’s something that’s been puzzling me all week. Just why did SyFy want to make a reality show with Kristen ( 3rd Rock from the Sun) Johnson? Idea’s anyone?

Star Wars Stormtroopers - A New Hope (hot chicks!)

A lot of our readers will be aware of the fighting 501st, the organisation of Earth-bound Stormtroopers who come from all parts of the globe. If ever you see a stormtrooper at a convention, film opening or charity event, chances are they're from the 501st.

The local Australian contingent is headed up by Terror Australis, but most states have their own garrisons, if you want to check it out. The suits are generally better quality and higher detail than seen in the original Star Wars film, and are really quite impressive in the flesh.

Alien Versus Predator Demo Goes Live Tonight!

The much anticipated AvP demo will be released later this evening, across Xbox Live, Playstation Network and STEAM.

For Aussies, the first 4,000 people to download the PS3 version of the demo from the Australian PlayStation Store will receive a free downloadable Character Skin Pack consisting of three skins - one for Alien, one for Predator and one for Marine - to customise their multiplayer character in online matches when using the full PS3 version of the game. This offer is exclusive to Australian PlayStation Network subscribers and is limited to the first 4,000 people who download the demo.

Bio-Robots and the World of the Film Surrogates - Not Too Far Away

Most Sci Fi fans saw the Bruce Willis film Surrogates on the big screen. It's coming out in Oz on Blu-ray and DVD on March 4. As part of the general hoo-ha surrounding the release, we hopped on to a virtual roundtable with Futurist, Dr James Canton and Randall Alley, CEO of Biodesigns, who opened up on the increasingly sophisticated and sometimes disturbing near future that the world of creepy iHumans have in store for us. They also open up the worlds of prosthetics and bio-engineering from a unique perspective.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen Sweeps Razzies

The Razzies, the international home of the world's worst movies, have announced their nominations for 2009. In not entirely a massive surprise, Michael Bay's Transformers:Revenge of the Fallen leads the way with seven nominations.

In addition to Worst Director and Worst Picture, the film is up for Worst Remake, Rip-Off or Sequel, Worst Screenplay, Worst Supporting Actress (Julie White as the stoned, screaming mother of Shia Le Bouf), Worst Screen Couple (Le Bouf and either Megan Fox or Any Transformer) and Worst Actress (Fox again, dually nominated for this film and Jennifer's Body).
