1988. Terry Gilliam's weird and wonderful ode to the tall story features an all star cast and a roller-coaster ride of adventures that take us all over the world (and even to the moon) with some of the more hard-to-believe characters of not-quite history.
If you can remember sitting in bed listening to fairy tales - this is even better, with Gilliam's Pythonesque grasp of the ridiculous, and a darker twinge of doom and foreboding. The more stories the Baron tells, the more impossible his adventures, the younger and more vibrant he becomes - just like his audience.
Look out for one of the truly great screen entrances (Uma Thurman, as Venus). Decide for yourself if beautiful lies are better than the awful truth.
