1992. With the success of Batman, Tim Burton returned three years later to face a huge wave of expectation. Michael Keaton returns as Bruce Wayne, Danny DeVito is Oswald Cobblepot (aka The Penguin) and Michelle Pfeiffer slays 'em as Catwoman.
Dark, often filled with pathos, this blends themes of loss, madness, darkness and evil with a child's carnival of colour and movement. Disconcerting, to say the least. Michelle Pfeiffer, gone absolutely aneroxia-fuelled bonkers in her sexy skin-tight vinyl outfit, proves more than a match for Keaton's laconic Dark Knight, and Danny DeVito's malformed villain is at once both repulsive and pathetic.
The film is like a nightmare, but gentle as a dream - with rocket-equipped penguins! Nominated for two Oscars, it's a must-see movie.
