See The Dark Knight At Sydney Imax!

AT THE MOVIES

Tuesday, July 15

by Captain

General Manager of Sydney Imax, Mark Bretherton, has announced that Sydneysiders are in fact the luckiest people in the world this week, and it's not because The Pope is in town.

Several key scenes of The Dark Knight were originally shot on Imax cameras. The ratio of Imax film information to normal 35 mm film information is 10:1. The print being used in Sydney was cut from the original film negative - the only other in the world will be in London.

That means you will be able to see the biggest, clearest, most spectacular Dark Knight sequences if you live in Sydney.

The Dark Knight Review!

AT THE MOVIES

Monday, July 14

by Captain

Released July 17
Starring Christian Bale, Heath Ledger, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Gary Oldman, Aaron Eckhart
Director Christopher Nolan
Rating M

It's tempting just to write a one word review for this film - 'astonishing'. It's not just the best comic book movie ever made, it's one of the best 'movie' movies ever made.

You should go and see it.

All the hype that's been bandied about is not some kind of weird fanboy frenzy. This may be a comic book movie, but only because it's been based on a character created for a comic book. There is a tone of realism that acknowledges its origins within the film, that separates it from all 'comic book' movies that have come before it. Some of this is due to the performances, with most obviously Heath Ledger leading the way, but it is also a testament to top-notch direction and scriptwriting. We haven't gone to some far off world inhabited by super heroes and super villains. They've come to us.

What's On This Week July 14 - 20

CAPTAIN'S BLOG

Sunday, July 13

by Captain

The joy of July's SCI FI Originals just keep on coming this week with some big names and a some big ideas - but first up this Monday is a bit of Star Trek Midnight Madness - the classic fun that is Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country.

It's actually on at 12.10 am on Tuesday morning, but hey - this kind of Star Trek fun is the kind of thing you stay up for! With Kirk and McCoy stuck in a Klingon death camp and a plot to destabilize a newfound peace between The Federation and the Klingon Empire - that involves a young and spunky Kim Cattrall, you really can't afford to miss out. Certainly not with Shakespeare-quoting Klingons, sexy shape-shifting aliens and 'Captain' Sulu yelling lines like "then fly her apart, then!"

"Crap!"

As John Shepperd would say when faced with a Wraith Hive ship. It's also what one would say should one miss out on the opportunity to grab a hold of one of ten (10) Season 3 Stargate: Atlantis box sets currently up for grabs in our awesome Stargate: Atlantis competition!

To enter, just click on WIN in our Navbar and answer the simple question - who is your favourite Stargate: Atlantis character, and why?

It is perfectly acceptable to say, for example, "McKay, because he pronounces it 'zed' and not 'zee' pee emm." Or, you may wish to offer a pithy comment about Ronon and his big gun. It's entirely up to you...

PC

Hop on board the Normandy for some intergalactic mayhem.

This is tough one to review. Coming after it's massive success on the console market, Mass Effect is something that as a gamer either you're completely done with or still only mildly curious - if you haven't got it by now, well, what's stopping you? The only thing - you don't have a console and have waited for it to come on to the PC.

If that's the case, the wait was worth it! All the hype is true.

Just a reminder from an earlier post - if you're a bit of a Manga fan, you don't want to miss out on the big screen screening of Batman: Gotham Knight and some other monster anime that's getting shown on Dendy screens right this very minute, including the sequel to the iconic CGI masterpiece, Appleseed.

If you're a bit of a Batfan, what better way to prepare for The Dark Knight, coming out July 17 (review of which will be posted very soon!) than to see the 'bridging' stories of Batman: Gotham Knight? Whilst not exactly A to B, Gotham Knight's six separate stories add real depth to the Dark Knight film experience - really giving one of the film's final twists some extra emotional oomph.

Jumper

Released July 2
Starring Hayden Christensen, Samuel L Jackson, Diane Lane, Jamie Bell
Director Doug Limon
Rated M

Have we got some Jumping Jumper Footage for you!

The Hayden Christensen starrer is out now on DVD and Blu-ray , and comes packed with extras.

Whilst the film didn't quite manage to add up the sum of it's hype, it's still an excellent example of cool special effects and a pretty decent Sci Fi concept.

One of the most shocking announcements in recent Sci Fi movie history was that Keanu Reeves was appearing in a remake of one of the greatest Sci Fi films of all time, The Day The Earth Stood Still.

First off it was dismissed as a joke, then as a bad Hollywood joke, and then as a symptom of the remake-itis that has never really slowed down and will never ever stop.

But wait. The trailer is here. And it looks pretty good! Hang on - really good!

Alongside Reeves, TDESS (as we'll shorten it to) stars Jennifer Connelly, and Kathy Bates, who are both Oscar-winners. And, given its heavy 'end of the world' images, it has the bonus of not being directed by Roland Emmerich!
