Hop on board the Normandy for some intergalactic mayhem.

This is tough one to review. Coming after it's massive success on the console market, Mass Effect is something that as a gamer either you're completely done with or still only mildly curious - if you haven't got it by now, well, what's stopping you? The only thing - you don't have a console and have waited for it to come on to the PC.

If that's the case, the wait was worth it! All the hype is true.

Jumper

Released July 2
Starring Hayden Christensen, Samuel L Jackson, Diane Lane, Jamie Bell
Director Doug Limon
Rated M

Have we got some Jumping Jumper Footage for you!

The Hayden Christensen starrer is out now on DVD and Blu-ray , and comes packed with extras.

Whilst the film didn't quite manage to add up the sum of it's hype, it's still an excellent example of cool special effects and a pretty decent Sci Fi concept.

One of the most shocking announcements in recent Sci Fi movie history was that Keanu Reeves was appearing in a remake of one of the greatest Sci Fi films of all time, The Day The Earth Stood Still.

First off it was dismissed as a joke, then as a bad Hollywood joke, and then as a symptom of the remake-itis that has never really slowed down and will never ever stop.

But wait. The trailer is here. And it looks pretty good! Hang on - really good!

Alongside Reeves, TDESS (as we'll shorten it to) stars Jennifer Connelly, and Kathy Bates, who are both Oscar-winners. And, given its heavy 'end of the world' images, it has the bonus of not being directed by Roland Emmerich!

Just a reminder from an earlier post - if you're a bit of a Manga fan, you don't want to miss out on the big screen screening of Batman: Gotham Knight and some other monster anime that's getting shown on Dendy screens right this very minute, including the sequel to the iconic CGI masterpiece, Appleseed.

If you're a bit of a Batfan, what better way to prepare for The Dark Knight, coming out July 17 (review of which will be posted very soon!) than to see the 'bridging' stories of Batman: Gotham Knight? Whilst not exactly A to B, Gotham Knight's six separate stories add real depth to the Dark Knight film experience - really giving one of the film's final twists some extra emotional oomph.

For all those who have newly signed up on our Forum, why not 'pop in' tonight for a bit of a digital 'meet and greet'?

We'll be setting up a HELLO thread in GENERAL DISCUSSION, for anyone who wants to get acquainted with other SCI FI buffs and some of our more regular Forum posters.

It's a good chance to make connections, find out some info on shows you love and perhaps share some of those classic Sci Fi moments - or even some deep dark Sci Fi secrets!

The SCI FI Forum has all sorts of threads, covering all our shows, new movies and it even gets a bit deep and meaningful when discussions turn to the future of genetic engineering or the meaning of 'life, the universe and everything' (apparently, still 42!).

Free Ps3 With New Sony Hd TV Offer

GADGETS

Tuesday, July 8

by Captain

Okay Gadget-heads, still waiting for the exact right time to purchase your flat panel 1080i TV with built-in HD tuner?

It's a toughie, that's for sure. However, you may find this new offer from Sony to your liking. The good people at Sony Australia are now offering a free PS3 with every Full HD Bravia TV - including the updated W and V series.

If you haven't seen this lot yet, they're pretty cool, and CNET gives the Sony XBR's their top score out of LCDs. And, if you get a flat panel TV under 50 inches, the general consensus is that LCD is the way to go.

Believe it or not, but there's an International Film School in Sydney, and they're launching a series of Master Classes for writers keen to hone their skill in the craft of screen writing.

We're always keen to foster talent, or at least promote it, or, well, encourage it, at the very least, so if you've got a hankering to be the world's next big Sci Fi movie or even TV writer, then this might be something for you to have a look at.

The 2008 season of master classes begins on July the 26th and goes through until the 21st of November.

What's On This Week July 7 - 13

CAPTAIN'S BLOG

Sunday, July 6

by Captain

This week seems to be more than just business (if you could ever call it that) as usual at the SCI FI Channel. We're unleashing yet another pair of the monstacular SCI FI Originals on an unsuspecting Australian public, from the very depths of the earth to the wide spaces of the open air. It's all rather entomological (perhaps, even a bit Them! inspired) this July week on SCI FI.

To paraphrase George Orwell - six legs good, two legs - bad luck!

Tuesday night (at 10.20pm) the action starts with the finest gigantic beetles that $2.50 can buy! Caved In tells the tale of a viciously over-insectoided Swiss salt mine that claimed its first victims in 1948, and now, 50 years later, the bugs are back for more when Christopher Atkins (The Blue Lagoon) and Star Trek's Colm Meaney join in the fun. Gigantic subterranean stag beetles versus family of adventurous humans? Don't event think about missing it!

Dr Horrible's Singalong Blog

NEWS

Whedonites ahoy! This isn't for you! You know all about this already! Don't you? Of course you do. This little snippet is for those who have watched a bit of Buffy and Angel, enjoyed Firefly, and know just enough about the wonderful world of Sci Fi to get excited when we mention 'Joss Whedon' and 'new project'.

And no, uber-geeks, this isn't about Dolhouse - more about that later.

It's about, and the title of this post may have been a bit of a giveaway - Dr Horrible's Singalong Blog. What, pray tell, is that? you may ask. And quite rightly so. Sounds ridiculous. But it's not. It's entirely rubbish-free - it's the product of the recent writer's strike which saw poor old Joss "writing is like breathing" Whedon, unable to write for TV or the silver screen. So he wrote for the web. With his family. Really. Josh Whedon, Zack Whedon (who wrote on Deadwood), Jed Whedon and Jed's fiancee all chipped in!
