SCI FI PI

Released February 14
Starring Hayden Christensen, Rachel Bilson, Samuel L Jackson, Jamie Bell
Director Doug Liman
Rated PG

The beginning of something big? Perhaps. A completely satisfying film? Not quite. Worth a look? Definitely.

Hayden Christensen is David Rice, a young man who grew up tough - his mother absconded when he was five, his father wasn't the best and his schooldays were not entirely bully free. Not surprising he's a bit of a loner. Oh, also, the world thinks he's dead. When he was fifteen he fell through the ice on a frozen river. Facing certain death, his body spontaneously teleports to the local library. Soon he discovers, not only is it easy to disappear when the world thinks you're dead, but also the rules and regulations of his new talent. Not long after, he realises, like all fifteen year olds, that teleporting has one particular purpose - to rob banks.

Here it is, moviefans, a sneak peek at the upcoming Bond film, Quantum of Solace, chatting with director Marc Forster and a squizz at goings-on on set.

Quantum of Solace? What the hell? Not Quantumfinger? Or Thunderquantum? No! A 'small amount of comfort'.

Little comfort indeed for fans of mindless action, but highly encouraging for those enjoying this new psychologically rich, Daniel Craig-led chapter in the timeless Bond saga. That's not to say that this isn't chock full of mindful action, with (purportedly) double the action of the first - with jetboats, fighting femmes, stunt driving (of course!) and precariously placed punch ups, this looks the goods indeed.

When you say 'Captain Jack', some foolish people may respond with 'Jack Sparrow!'.

But not the hardcore Torchwood fans - for them, there is only one Captain Jack - Captain Jack Harkness, the immortal, happy go lucky (most of the time) adventurer who leads the Torchwood team against several universes full of bad guys. Never to be outdone by that time-travelling interloper, Doctor Who, Captain Jack has garnered a legion of fans, as has the actor who playes him - John Barrowman.

We've managed to snare this interview from the BBC Worldwide where all things Jack are revealed, and by all, we mean 'all'. So now, when someone says to you - 'you don't know Jack!' you may reply, 'no, sir, I beg to differ - I do know Jack'.

What's On This Week Feb 11 - 17

CAPTAIN'S BLOG

Sunday, February 10

by Captain

With Valentine's Day coming up this Thursday the 14th, SCI FI has an especially romantic line-up this week for lovers - of quality Science Fiction.

When we said changes are afoot at SCI FI, we weren't kidding, and this week sees an entirely new line-up for Wednesday nights.

At 7.30pm it's the Halliwell sisters up to their necks in trouble again in Charmed, as Prue has to take on the identity of an assassin who is out to kill her and her sisters.

8.30pm is the all-new time slot for the sea-monster madness that is Surface, with an all new running beginning - well, at the beginning. Tonight, Episode One is loud and proud. If you haven't seen the show, it builds very nicely into a blend of jaw-dropping visuals, government conspiracies and, eventually, major disasters. Cool sea-monsters (and how they grow (and grow and grow)) are only part of the fun. Get in at the start and make Surface your Wednesday night special.

If you haven't seen the pics or video footage you could be forgiven for not quite believing the hype that has surrounded Assassin's Creed. However, now with the upcoming release on PC (with extra side missions), there's very little excuse for the casual gamer not to pick this up.

Why is it so good? In a word - atmosphere.

The Dark Knight Trailer - Ledger Looks Awesome

AT THE MOVIES

Thursday, February 7

by Captain

Whilst there are some good trailers out there at the moment, none have the zest and pure excitement that's oozing out of the new full Dark Knight trailer. Nor do they have the 'hang on a minute, let's just stop and appreciate what this really, really means' aura about them.

Heath Ledger's performance has been rumoured to be Oscar-worthy, and these new snippets in the trailer tend to back that up. All will be revealed later in the year when the movie makes it to theatres in Australia on July 17 - but in the meantime, enjoy!

Torchwood Season 1 Out On Dvd

BLU-RAY / DVD

Thursday, February 7

by Captain

With the February 7 release of the first complete Season of the Doctor Who spinoff, Torchwood, in Oz, we've dug up some fun facts for uber-geekoids to pore over as they hurl themselves into its sheer Welshness.

If you haven't experienced the new world of Doctor Who and Torchwood yet, it has far higher production values than the venerable Doctor Who series, more complex character roles and some tremendous writing. A healthy injection into the Sci Fi world and well worth a look.

Harder, grittier and darker than the new Doctor Who, Torchwood has garnered a loyal following and points to a healthy Science Fiction culture in the UK, outside of the US and Canada. Who knows, perhaps even, one day, maybe, Australia will make a Science Fiction series that takes over the world.

The Mist Review

AT THE MOVIES

Tuesday, February 5

by Captain

Released Feb 7
Starring Thomas Jane, Marcia Gay Harden, Andre Braugher
Director Frank Darabont
Rated MA

If you've ever loved a horror movie, go and see The Mist.

No mucking about, no excuses, no moderations. It is the most satisfying horror movie to be released in years. The only type of horror fan to be disappointed by this film will be those 'goreholics' who don't like any film that doesn't have someone's face or genitals being slowly ripped off to the latest grindcore soundtrack. To those, The Mist may seem 'vanilla'. For everyone else, it's a classic.
