SCI FI PI

Chris Carter changed the way the world saw science fiction. The debut of Mulder and Scully on 'regular' television brought science fiction into the mainstream forever, and paved the way for such present day hits as Lost and Heroes. It also established a tradition of genre film production in Canada that continues on into the industry powerhouse of today. The twin mountain top of the 'Lionsgate' looks over Vancouver as testament to that.

Shows like Battlestar Galactica and the Stargates have taken the banner and shown the world that it's not just Hollywood that can make great Sci Fi.

One of the coolest things about getting to go on set of a major Sci Fi show is sharing it with SCI FI fans.

With our visit on board The Daedalus, we could get right up close and see the kind of detail that you never get to see on air, the kind of 'behind the scenes' details that really define the show, but is never really revealed through transmission.

The first thing you notice about The Daedalus set of Stargate:SG-1 and Stargate:Atlantis is that as a space ship, it hasn't been created to look that futuristic - obviously, it's made to look like it was built in the present time, and shares a great deal of the surprisingly analogue technology that you'd find in any state of the art aircraft carrier. The buttons are switches, they aren't just glass panels, there's plumbing fittings and there's more than just a passing nod to the warning labels and signs that you see in the modern US. Navy.

Okay okay - we've all seen or heard stuff about this excellent little gadget, but seeing the full-on sales video is something else.

Nikko home electronics, at www.nikkor2d2.com, have got this baby on sale all over the world. Their big specialty is radio controlled vehicles and toys, so it's not surprising that the R2 D2 DVD Projector is fully RC - with it's own Millenium Falcon controller!

It's not just a funky toy - it actually works, with 20 W inbuilt speakers, a USB slot, CD player, and it's compatible with Mp3 and Mp4 and Jpeg. It also has a WiFi transmitter for hooking up to other gadgets. Perhaps the coolest thing - you can now watch movies on the ceiling.

This marks the 200th post since SCI FI PI hit the blogosphere, and what better way to celebrate than to announce that the next few days of manic ramblings, recommendations and reviews will be coming from downtown Vancouver, just minutes away from the set of Stargate:Atlantis.

Not only will SCI FI PI be gathering crucial info on Stargate: Continuum (at the first ever screening) but we'll also be talking to the stars of Stargate, both SG-1 and Atlantis, as well as the 'God' of Stargate himself, Brad Wright. We'll be getting the scoop on Atlantis Season 4, and possibly even Season 5!

New Extended Hulk Trailer

AT THE MOVIES

Wednesday, May 14

by Captain

With Iron Man's metal-mashing malleting of the Wachowski's Speed Racer in this weekend's US boxoffice, it looks like 2008 really is the year of the superhero - and in particular, Marvel.

As the June 13 release date gets closer, Marvel have released a new Incredible Hulk trailer that looks like it pretty much quashes the negative rumours floating around Edward Norton's supposed 'creative differences'.

Looks like Tim Roth is also back to his best in human form as Emile Blonsky and in CGI form as The Abomination. For those who were wondering what's so good about Marvel making it's own movie - Robert Downey Jr will be making an appearance as Iron Man himself, Tony Stark. Way to cross-pollinate gigantic mega-movies, Marvel.

Even before its release, Cloverfield was a pop culture phenomenon - now it goes down as one of those rare movies where the term 'instant classic' applies, beyond first weekend hype.

But the film isn't all that it appears, there's a little bit more it than some kids and a handycam and the Hollywood juggernaut that is JJ Abrams.

We managed to track down the film's million-words-per-minute director, Matt Reeves, in his LA office, just a day after he arrived back from the film's final theatrical release - in the home of Godzilla, Japan. He gave us the low down on the film's creation, production, and of course, whether there will be a sequel or not.

Here's a scoop for Sydneysiders - Richard Kelly, the famed director of Donnie Darko, will be chatting with audience members at the very first and only screening of his legendary film, Southland Tales, at Popcorn Taxi.

It's on this Thursday, May 15.

If you haven't heard the epic story of the film's less than stellar response at Cannes, the chopping and changing, the diametrically opposed opinions on its merits and it's extraordinary blend of Sci Fi, musical and the metaphysical, then you would be excused for not leaping out of your seat and getting a ticket right now. For those who are in the know - it's as awesome as you imagined, if not more.

William Shatner's Rocketman

SPECIAL FEATURES

Saturday, May 10

by Captain

Some of our SCI FI fans may not have seen this already, and for those who have, you really don't need much convincing to see it again.

William Shatner remains an icon not just of Sci Fi, but of popular culture. At the 1978 Saturn Awards, he blended his singular vocal stylings with the words and music of Bernie Taupin and Mr Elton John.

The results speak for themselves. It is simultaneously the most ridiculous thing that has ever existed and, obviously, the coolest thing that has ever been done. Sit back, relax and enjoy - William Shatner's version of 'Rocketman'.

Hancock Trailer - Will Smith, Superbum!

AT THE MOVIES

Saturday, May 10

by Captain

With all these superhero movies flying about it's important to get some perspective - with yet another superhero movie!

But wait, there's something slightly different about this one - "look up in the sky, it's a bird, it's a plane, its a... a... a homeless person. Oh."

The plot has Smith as a superhero fallen on hard times, who saves agent Jason Bateman - who vows to get his 'career' back on track. But then there's the wife...

This is going to be the mother of all 'tightrope walks' as director Peter Berg and star Will Smith attempt not to cross the line into 'ha ha, being homeless is so funny!' Will it be of the same ilk as 1986's 'Down and Out in Beverly Hills' or is it more about celebrity excess? Hard to tell, but with Berg's track record including 'The Kingdom' there looks to be plenty of action ahead of us. Although the 'yucks' may trade into 'message' a bit much - still, one thing's for sure, the trailer looks pretty cool.
