The US SCI FI Channel has announced that work will commence on Caprica, a two-hour Battlestar Galactica prequel.

It will be set 50 years before the Second Cylon War.

Says SCI FI US : "Caprica follows two rival families - -the Greystones and the Adamas -- as they grow, compete and thrive in the vibrant world of the 12 Colonies. Enmeshed in the burgeoning technology of artificial intelligence and robotics that will eventually lead to the creation of the Cylons, the two houses go toe to toe."

James Kyson Lee Interview - The Ordinary Hero

INTERVIEWS

Wednesday, March 19

by Captain

James Kyson Lee plays Ando on Heroes. Ando's the 'sensible one' who gets dragged all over the planet by his crazy friend Hiro, who's developed the nasty habit of bending the space-time continuum and teleporting himself, not just to different spots on the planet, but at different times. A hard act to follow, to say the least! The 'Tokyo Two' have amassed a legion of loyal fans, and give Heroes a wonderful streak of humour and whimsy to what can be, at times, rather dark viewing.

James took time out of a busy schedule that sees him not only shooting Heroes but a slew of new movies to talk to SCI FI PI. Read on to hear him spill all about how he reached Hero-status and how he now does three times the work of any other actor on the show.

Sir Arthur C. Clarke Dies

NEWS

Wednesday, March 19

by Captain

Oh no!

One of the greatest Sci Fi authors ever, Sir Arthur C.Clarke, has died at the age of 90 at his home in Sri Lanka, where he had lived since 1956. Film fans will know him as the creator of 2001: A Space Odyssey, but avid readers will tell you that he's been writing Science Fiction stories and novels since 1948.

Famously, he is credited as having predicted the satellite, although he is more correctly acknowledged for his concept of using geosynchronous satellites for communication.

One of the cooler sites on the web, io9.com, has always delighted us with an interesting slant on all things gadgety.

A recent page has them showing the original inspiration for some of the cooler creations in the Sci Fi universe. The idea that something as terrifying as Robert Patrick's T1000 in Terminator 2 could be born in a hot fudge sundae seems to be so perfectly perverse that we can only think that it must be true. What's On This Week March 17 -23

CAPTAIN'S BLOG

Sunday, March 16

by Captain

This week is one of those seminal weeks on SCI FI where you can look back, in years to come, and say 'I was there'.

This Thursday, March 20, at 7.30pm, Heroes will air for the first time on it's proper channel, SCI FI. Not only that, but you'll get to see the first three episodes back to back, so it'll be Heroes from 7.30pm until 10.00pm on Thursday, a great way to really revel in a great show. Check out our Heroes microsite for updates and cool stuff.

The day before, on Wednesday the 19th of March, Voyager will start its own, er voyage (really, are we really going to say voyage?) of triple treats from 1pm. It's a midday mini-marathon that will take you to the Delta Quadrant and leave you up to the eyeballs in Borg. Three episodes back to back give you enough time to truly savour the Janeway experience and get to know the most far-flung crew in the Star Trek galaxy.

In a disturbing trend, European robotocists have not only begun work on but now are further developing not normal, bring me a drink Martini-making robots, but self-replicating, swarm mentality robots.

We'll give you a moment for the eerie icy chill to run up and down your spine.

Yep.

"The REPLICATOR project focuses on the development of an advanced robotic system, consisting of a super-large-scale swarm of small autonomous mobile micro-robots that are capable of self-assembling into large artificial organisms."

Doomsday Trailer

AT THE MOVIES

Friday, March 14

by Captain

It's Mad Max 2 meets Escape From New York! Neil Marshall, director of The Descent and Dog Soldiers, has ripped Scotland apart and torn it a new apocalypse for this unapologetic romp through the end-of-the-world-as-we-know-it-but-I-feel-fine genre.

Starring Rhona Mitra, who is a one-eyed ass-whupping elite soldier sent to lead a hand picked team to find a cure for the deadly plague that threatens to kill millions, this has more gratuitous violence, cannibalism and surly attitudes than is good for you, but what the heck, we'll have some more!

Supanova has just released its cemented, set-in-stone, not to be changed (at all) schedule for 2008, so convention fans can rejoice and finally book their schedules!

In 2008, Supanova will run from March 20 to 30th, at the Melbourne Showgrounds, and April 5th to the 6th in Brisbane at the RNA showgrounds.

Lovely ladies (and fan faves) Jewel Staite and Teryl Rothery are the big stars this year, so if you've got a hankering for all things Stargatey, with a dash of Firefly and B5, then things look good.

SCI FI PI visited the new Underworld movie, which is currently being shot in giant warehouses in the outskirts of Auckland and is posting this from a hotel room in the land of the long white cloud.

The prequel to the Underworld movies, Underworld: Rise of the Lycans, takes us back in time for swashbuckling mediaeval vampires vs werewolves action.

Directed by famed production designer, Patrick Tatopolous, the film features the return of Michael Sheen as Lucian and Bill Nighy as Viktor, and sees the full appearance of Sonja, Viktor's daughter, vampire lover of werewolf Lucian and cause of all the fuss that is the thousand year war between wolf and bat, played by Rhona Mitra.

CAPTAIN'S BLOG

One of the greats. This week. On SCI FI.

Total Recall.

Yesss!

Arnold Schwarzenegger stars as Douglas Quaid, knockabout construction worker of the future. He's got a great life, a great wife (Sharon Stone) and a hankering - to go to Mars.

But Mars is expensive, so why not have the virtual tour and go to Rekall, where you can have the memories of your perfect holiday installed into your brain?

But what happens when your dream holiday of venturing to Mars (as a secret agent) goes horribly horribly wrong, because, er, you already are a secret agent? What about that, huh!
