Syndeysiders, How Geeky Are You?

GADGETS

Thursday, June 19

by Captain

If the answer to that is very geeky, thank you for asking, then you may wish to head on down to the Grand Opening of Australia's first ever Apple Store, at 5pm tonight.

Opening up on 367 George St (opposite Darrell Lea) the new Apple store will come in three floors, providing the entire range of Macgasms for any bold enough to walk through the door. Tonight, the first 2500 people who do show up will receive a commemorative T-shirt (quite possibly with an Apple logo on it!)

Obviously Australians have been purchasing their Macs from resellers for the past thirty odd years, but it's only now that the Apple corporation has deigned fit to sell direct to the locals. Apparently, Mac resellers aren't that thrilled, having built up a brand name and a business for decades, only to see the Jobzers come in and say 'thanks, we'll take it from here'.

Supanova Pop Culture Expo (www.supanova.com.au) is coming to Sydney this weekend (June 21-22) but in a first, it'll be followed by Supanova's first ever Perth event the weekend after, on June 28-29.

If you're in Sydney or Perth (especially Perth) this may be your chance to check out a bona fide Sci Fi Convention.

Guests include Jared Padalecki and Sam Winchester from Supernatural (unfortunately Sydney only), Jewel Staite (Firefly & Stargate: Atlantis), Kandyse McClure (Battlestar Galactica), the Stars of TV's Gladiators and the one and only Nichelle Nichols (“Uhura” from Star Trek - The Original Series) who has now joined the cast of Heroes.

Test Your Space Survivability!

GADGETS

Wednesday, June 18

by Captain

Here's a nifty little website for all those people who have ever wondered how long they'd survive in the harsh vacuum of space without a space suit, or of course, a space ship. We've all seen Sci Fi moments where characters manage to survive with the occasional frostbite, burst blood vessels and occasional icky eyeballs.

But when it comes to yourself, sometimes a Sci Fi scriptwriter just isn't good enough - we need the cold harsh reality that only a website can provide! The good people at oneforyou now offer this sterling service. Not that you may need it straight away, but it's good to know, just in case...

Christopher Judge is a man who's quick with a laugh, and with a deep resonant voice, it's a booming one at that. Booming. He's not shy of the occasional considered opinion, either.

But for all his success, he is laid back, relaxed and personable, and holds no airs or graces - in fact, the most refreshing and surprising thing about him is his utter candour - as you'll see in Part Two of SCI FI PI's epic interview with the man who is Teal'c.

In this installment, he speaks about (among other things) race relations, Stargate:Continuum, the war in Iraq, Michael Shanks' uncanny impersonations, golf, and why he should have been fired from Stargate SG-1. Something for everyone, really.

Stan Winston Dies

NEWS

Tuesday, June 17

by Captain

Stan Winston, Hollywood's reigning master of visual effects and makeup, has died at the age of 62.

In a long career that began in TV, Winston won four Oscars - one for Aliens, two for Terminator 2 and one for Jurassic Park.

His stellar list of credits in the makeup department also include Terminator 3, Artificial Intelligence, Eward Scissorhands, The Thing, and he often doubled up in the visual effects department as well, working on (among many others) Iron Man, Big Fish, Galaxy Quest and Predator. He saw both departments as extensions of the other, and was interested primarily in creating creatures that were characters, not merely visual effects.

It had to happen.

William Katt, the poodle-headed star of 80's classic Sci Fi, The Greatest American Hero, has joined the cast of Heroes in its third season. He'll be playing a rather seedy reporter (oxymoron anyone?) who is on the hunt for Ali Larter's character(s).

Cool Sci Fi stars of yesteryear are now becoming a feature of Tim Kring's megahit - Katt joins George Takei, Nichelle Nicholls, Joanna Cassidy and Bruce Boxleitner on the show.

In the meantime, be sure to check out the glory that is Heroes on SCI FI.

Spore Cell Stage Pics!

GAMES

Monday, June 16

by Captain

In what looks to be the most epic computer game ever, Spore takes you from single celled organism to space faring culture - one of the titles bandied about for it was 'Sim Everything' - so you get some idea of the massive scope of this 'massively single-player online game'

We've got our hands on some pics of the 'Cell Stage', the first in the Spore universe. Cell Stage is your introduction to the fundamentals of Spore. You play a simple organism which is dropped onto your planet by way of meteor. As you do.

What's On This Week June 16 - 22

CAPTAIN'S BLOG

The SCI FI Original Movies are here!

This week sees the genius that is Cemetery Gates hit the airwaves as SCI FI unleashes a forbidden planet of movies created specifically for the SCI FI Channel.

A pair of stoner eco-activists liberate an ill-tempered mutated Tasmanian Devil (no lasers on its forehead though) from a lab and release it near a woodland cemetery – the same cemetery where a group of college students are making a film - and the son of the mad scientist who grew up with the previously un-mutated creature as a pet is helping out! Cemetery Gates (2006) stars Reggie Bannister, Peter Stickles and Aime Wolf in a goretastic horror comedy that's not to be missed by schlock connoisseurs.

The Happening Review

AT THE MOVIES

Friday, June 13

by Captain

Released June 12
Director M.Night Shyamalan
Starring Mark Whalberg, John Leguizamo, Zooey Deschanel
Rated MA

This film is fascinating. Not entirely successful, to say the least, but fascinating in many ways. Is it M.Night Shyamalan's final filmic coffin nail? Not quite. Will people spit out out their soft drink in disbelief at what they're seeing on screen? Quite possibly. For Shyamalan has reached out boldly, and perhaps has crossed too many lines for the discerning audience to forgive him.

Speed Racer Review

AT THE MOVIES

Thursday, June 12

by Captain

Released June 12
Starring Emile Hirsch, John Goodman, Christina Ricci, Matthew Fox, Susan Sarandon
Director The Wachowski Brothers
Rated PG

Speed Racer is a kid's movie.

A hell of a kid's movie. It's designed, however, for kids who grew up in the last ten computer game years, not before then. If you can't follow this super-saturated hyper-edited roller coaster of a movie, then your brain is old daddy-o. Old.

For those of us who grew up with Speed Racer on the TV, the shift from small screen to big screen will come as quite a shock.
