Gamers (and Sci Fi buffs) who live in Brisvegas, make sure you've got your diaries out - GenCon is coming early next month, and is not to be missed.

What is GenCon, oh Newbie? Glad you asked.

It's a very specific kind of convention, aimed primarily at gamers, and has been doing the rounds in the US for quite a few years now (around 40!) It has now evolved into the premier event for anyone playing console and PC games, as well as fans of anime, board games, dice games, collectible card games, miniatures, live action roleplaying and more. Along with a vast supply of every type of gaming, there are guests - and for the inaugural Oz Gen Con, a great double act - Jamie Bamber (Apollo) and James Callis (Baltar) from Battlestar Galactica.

In a cruel twist of fate, Jamie Bamber and James Callis look like they won't be able to make it to Oz for the upcoming GenConOz in Brisbane or the special 'Boys of Battlestar' night in Sydney, due to extended production commitments shooting Battlestar Galactica.

Whilst GenConOz looks set to still go ahead with a host of other guests, the Sydney event looks like it's in real trouble.

This bad news is fresh, so there's no confirmation as yet on The Hub Productions website. We'll keep you posted if there's a sudden shift in fortune and we see a last-minute resurgence in Jamies - although at this stage, it doesn't look good.

by Captain

With the upcoming Quantum of Solace looking better and better (you did see our behind the scenes vids, surely?) the good people from James Bond Movies Are Totally Awesome Even If They're Not Strictly Sci Fi are proud to announce that the good stuff from the Broccolli farm is coming to you in 2008 in the sheer unadulterated power of the Blu-ray device.

And you'll have plenty of time to prepare, too - they won't be out until November, which, oddly enough, is also the same month that Quantum of Solace will be released theatrically.

Director of Watchmen, Zack Snyder, is offering you the opportunity to create "Veidt Enterprises" TV commercials that could end up in the feature film scheduled to be released in cinemas early 2009.

If you've not heard of the Watchmen, then you are no longer permitted to call yourself a comic boob geek. Watchmen is the ultimate post modern superhero graphic novel, and will be made into a ginormous film for release early next year.

To get started, download the standard definition and/or high definition assets from the competition site, and then shoot your own original TV commercial that advertises one of the products! Remember, the movie is set in 1985, so TV commercials should be in 4:3 aspect ratio (so it looks like standard TV, not widescreen) and they should be either 15, 30 or 60 seconds in length. The products are all made by "Veidt Enterprises," and you can download the product logos for your use as well.

Director Mcg Blogs About Terminator 4!

AT THE MOVIES

Tuesday, June 24

by Captain

Principal photography is well under way on Terminator Salvation. And in the tradition of the modern digitally-savvy Hollywood director, McG is letting everyone know about it on the internet with his very own blog. Which is awesome.

But what would you expect from someone known from childhood as McGinty?

This is the place (the only place, probably) on the internet where you can be assured of getting the info on the down-low. From the McG.

This is an official artwork from the film - depicting the post-apocalyptic world that John Connor must save from the robot hellspawn of Skynet.

Star Wars Sand Castles From Portugal!

SPECIAL FEATURES

Have you ever woken up on a Monday, or even a Tuesday, looked out the window at the rain and the wind and thought, holy hell, another boring day, off to work - why, oh why, baby Jesus, why would you do this to me?

Well, he does it to you to allow the karmic romper room for things like this. Without a constant diet of grey boring nothingness, something as delightful as this wouldn't be half as unexpected or as totally awesomely brilliant.

Trust the Portuguese to combine the unstoppable force of Star Wars with the moveable object that is sand in such a delightful way. Here's a couple of pics to prove that whilst he likes to dish out plenty of rough stuff, baby Jesus still has a twinkle in his eye.

CAPTAIN'S BLOG

Joyous June finishes off this week with yet another SCI FI premiere - and this time, it's personal.

Well, personal, if your name happens to be Jamie Summers.

And no, Jamie is not some new kind of British Chef. Jamie is a woman. The Bionic Woman.

This Friday night at 8.30pm, it's going to be a whole new take on the classic 70's series that starred Lindsay Wagner. A spinoff of the Bionic Man, it gave the world it's first 'fembots'.

But produced by David Eick, of Battlestar Galactica fame, the formula has been given a bit of sprucing up.

Babylon Ad Trailer In Spectrum!

AT THE MOVIES

Friday, June 20

by Captain

Okay spaceketeers, here's a genuine scoop!

For all the gigantic blockbuster Sci Fi and Super Hero movies raining down on us this 2008, there are a couple that haven't been given the same hullaballoo as your Iron Mans and your Dark Knights. One such film is Babylon AD, featuring the return of Vin Diesel to Sci Fi - and we've got the piping hot fresh trailer up and running in SPECTRUM.

B.A.D. (as we're going to call it, 'cause we're like that, and that's the way it is) looks to be a hyper-kinetic update on something akin to Children of Men, although there's not much to base that on in the trailer other than 'guy helps girl escape through dystopian landscape'. The plot sees hard man Toorop (Diesel) try to smuggle a girl from Russia to the US, who just happens to be carrying the secret to a genetically modified Messiah inside her. Hilarity (and carnage) ensue.

Adopt Sci Fi!

SPECIAL FEATURES

Did you ever get in a room and start talking to someone about Sci Fi and then realise after a few minutes that you just weren't getting through? That somewhere, in between 'Teal'c is awesome' and '7 of 9' is smokin' they started looking at you in that blank way usually reserved for gravy stains on corduroy trousers or bits of gum on the bottom of one's shoe?

Its a shameful and shaming experience. But it doesn't have to happen.

Too many people in the wide world aren't 'down' with Sci Fi. Typically, these are people who lack imagination, courage, and a history of regular torment and teasing as a child as they tried to protect their twelve-sided dice from schoolyard bullies, or brought their headless Princess Leia doll tearfully back home. These are the people who don't have 'their own little world'.
