Whilst Avatar, Star Trek and co did well to represent Sci Fi at the Oscars, and giving Sci Fi fans a fulfilled sense of pride in the process, the entertainment machine rolls on - signified by the massive outpouring of net activity after last night's release of the Iron Man 2 trailer. We'll have that up in Spectrum in a jiffy - but in the meantime, you may wish to salivate about another upcoming film - the 3D Hypernerdfest that is Tron Legacy.

The first trailer was merely awesome. This one tells you a bit more of the story, which so far, looks pretty good. All the old faves (albeit updated) are all there. How cool do the Recognizers look? Very cool.

Making Sci Fi in Australia

Many of you may have seen the Aussie Sci Fi/Vampire movie, Daybreakers, written and directed by Michael and Peter Spierig. Whilst funded by Canadian studio Lionsgate, it was, in all aspects, a local production, stars Willem Dafoe and Ethan Hawke notwithstanding. The success of the film, both critically and commercially, once again begs the question - why isn't more Sci Fi made on Australian soil?

We have some of the best technicians, crew and facilities in the world. Our special effects, post-production and acting talent are legendary. Yet, for some reason, there seems to be a lack of will at the producer or the funding-body level. Young genre filmmakers are forced to go rogue, completely independent, outside the 'system' that we have in Australia, by either making micro-budget films like Gabriel, or going directly to Hollywood, like Saw. The idea that a Sci Fi or genre film would get the attention and funding reserved for a 'typical' Australian film seems insane. It seems preposterous.

Guardians (of Ga'Hoole) Trailer!

Australia has once again been extremely busy making ground-breaking films. You may recall that powerhouse special effects company Animal Logic were helping a young fella by the name of Zack Snyder to get his next film made. Whilst Snyder had previously been scratching around on small budget melodramas like 300 and Watchmen, it's only now, with some true blue dinky di help can he fully flourish as a filmmaker, bringing the books and the worlds of Kathryn Lasky to life. Who lives in this world?

Best Lego Star Wars Battle - Ever

The internets are jam-packed with all things Lego and all things Star Wars. If the internet was a human body, they would be the spleen and the heart respectively (not sure whether porn would be the brain, or something else - hang on... what would it be? Er... oh no, you're thinking it too. Darn. That's a bit rude, isn't it?). In any case, we've all seen a million little videos that are mildly amusing and/or appearing somewhere on the sliding scale between FAIL and EPIC FAIL.

Not true with this latest creation from a big fan of the Star Wars game, The Force Unleashed. We can understand why xxxfancypantsxxx likes the game - it's pretty good, and it's voiced by none other than Chad Vader, Darth Vader's less successful He's transformed the little Danish yellow-faced men into stylish fighters with some great animation, sound effects and photo-shopping. The result is a truly inspiring piece of entertainment. Lots of fun.

Lara Croft Versus Slave Leia - Snowball Fight

They say that a picture tells a thousand words, but internet video, for the most part, tells a thousand WTFs.

This video, we believe, is taken from this year's Sundance Film Festival, featuring a transdimensional jump from Princess Leia Organa direct from Tatooine (nasty climate difference there) and a CGI-becomes-reality coalescence from computer game explorer and short shorts wearer, Lara Croft, throwing frozen balls of H2O at each other.

This footage, we warn our viewers, may cause a nerdgasm. You have been warned.

Futuristic Fashion: The Legacy of Alexander McQueen

Whilst the recent suicide of 40-year-old designer Alexander McQueen in his Mayfair home may have come as a shock to many, it may not be something that you'd expect to read about in a Sci Fi blog.

However, lovers of Science Fiction are people willing to open their eyes and their hearts to new possibilities and new directions, something for which the avant garde fashion designer was famous for.

Until his life was cut short, he worked in every strata of the fashion world, creating bold, borderline offensive collections like his 'Highland Rape' series, to even designing shoes for Puma.

If You See One Documentary This Year...

...make it this one!

'The People Vs George Lucas' has made a splash on the internet, due, perhaps, to the global domination of Star Wars. One wonders, actually, if George had just gone on to a different movie after his big hit, American Graffiti.

Imagine, say, if Howard the Duck had been a hit? (imagine!) We'd all be fluffing about with wise-cracking, cigar-smoking ducks, and complaining about how in the second trilogy a mallard called Ka Ka Klinks ruined it for everyone...

Still, that's an alternate reality. We'll go back there some other day.

El Battlestar Magnifico

Battlestar Galactica and Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody - together at last!

If you've ever wanted to see the entire four (and a bit) seasons of the revamped and revered Battlestar Galactica in a five and a half minute YouTube video with all new lyrics sung to the tune of Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody, well, here's your chance.

Quite clever, amazing editing - but the quality of singing may have Freddie Mercury whistling through his dry dusty teeth. Still - hats off, and sweeping the knees. We salute a grand effort.

Spike is in Caprica

With Battlestar Galactica full box sets and Blu-rays a delight this Christmas, and The Plan still a fresh memory, it's good to look ahead and know that the universe of BSG is still alive with the upcoming Caprica, which will get its US debut on Jan 22.

Set 50 years before the first Human Cylon War, the series traces two familes, and the rise of the Cylons. But you probably already knew that. What you might not have known was that James Marsters, famous for his role as Spike on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, will be in it.
