Heavy Rain: Breezethrough Review

Available on the PS3, now.

Few games have received the rapt attention that the launch of Heavy Rain has. From the first frames of scintillatingly detailed graphics, it's easy to understand what all the fuss is about. Playing the game isn't really about 'playing'. Heavy Rain takes us to a new place in the gaming universe. For some - it's going to be a magnetic, hypnotic experience.

For others - boring as bat shit.

Silent Hunter V is out! Alaaaaarm!

Silent Hunter 5 (Battle of the Atlantic) is the latest in the long running series of what are generally regarded as the finest submarine simulations ever. The graphics in this one are bowel-trembling with a brand new 3D engine that works in the water, but also, on your U-boat. You play the skipper of a rag tag crew with one mission - sink as many enemy tonnes as possible.

Rather than just check out the periscope, maps and see what's happening in the torpedo room from time to time, Silent Hunter 5 looks like a far more immersive simulation than we've previously seen. Heck, have a look at the crew list:

Civilization V Announced!

Huge gaming news for strategy geeks!

2K Games has today announced that Sid Meier’s Civilization V is currently in development.

2K says that Civilization V is reinvigorating the classic turn-based strategy genre with an all new engine built from the ground-up. Players will be introduced to an entirely new combat system, deeper diplomatic interactions and a cavalcade of expanded features.

What's new in particular? Hexagons instead of squares!

Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands - on the Wii

Ubisoft announced today new details for the upcoming release of Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands for the Nintendo Wii system. Developed by Ubisoft’s Quebec City Studio from the ground up, Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands is scheduled to ship May 13, 2010.

If you're a 'woodsy' kind of person, or haven't caught a glimpse of Jake Gyllenhaal's chest in promos for the upcoming movies, then you may not know that Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands is a new installment in the Prince of Persia series. We'll forgive you. Here's the plot for the new adventure: after leaving his father’s kingdom to prove his worth, the Prince is drawn towards a mysterious realm. He quickly discovers that he must harness his acrobatic abilities and powers over the environment to not only survive, but to save a mystic palace from unfathomable evil. So, you know, not much is different from every previous game. However, there has been a bit of reworking to the gameplay and graphics, which is usually always a good thing.

Bioshock 2 Looks Good

Bioshock 2 is set to release in Oz on February the 9th. We've been treated to a sneak peek with the game developers from 2K Marin and 2K Australia (based in Canberra, go Aussie!) and we can tell you that if you were a fan of Bioshock, get ready to give birth to an extremely bouncy baby of pure fanboy excitement.

Bioshock 2 is looking good. Very good.

It's a great response to what you'd expect in a sequel - offering you a similar experience, but building on the success of the original with more complex gameplay, yet with a smoother interface. In a sense, Bioshock 2 is easier to play - yet harder to master. You get to revisit the sunken, decayed glory of Rapture with all its delights and horrors, follow a whole new storyline, and, best of all, play as an iconic Big Daddy.

Assassin's Creed 2 Breezethrough Review

Platform: Xbox 360, Playstation 3, PC
Rated: 18

If you're waiting to buy this yet because you're unconvinced by all the positive 'game of the year' reviews, then maybe we can help you. For non-hardcore gamers, this is still a good bet, especially for a last minute Christmas gift. For hardcore gamers, you've already got this one, haven't you?

The game, not surprisingly, starts off where Assassin's Creed left off. The mind-bending conspiracies that involve genetic time travel and attempts to control the world will give you a whole new perspective on The Knights Templar. It's a cool little storyline that gets to unfold a lot more in this sequel, although you really don't need to have played the first one to get the gist.

Silent Hunter 5 - Brand New 3D Engine Looks The Goods

When it comes to submarine sims, the only one worth mentioning is Silent Hunter, and now, Silent Hunter 5 will soon be upon us. Of course, after all these years and all these versions, it begs the question - what's the point? What can get better? How can totally immersing yourself in the Atlantic (or the Pacific) for months on end inside a steel tube filled with dozens of smelly men get any more fun?

Ha ha! Yes. It is a particular brand of gamer who goes bananas for the SIlent Hunter series, but they are a loyal bunch, and will tell you that it's nice to take a break from shooting fifty bad guys a second in the latest fragfest and get into so good old immersive (submersive!) adventure that requires strategy and patience.
