Push DVD/BD Review

Starring Chris Evans, Dakota Fanning, Joel Gretsch,Camilla Bell, Djimon Honsou
Director Paul McGuigan
Rated M
Released Jan 4

If you're looking for a movie that blends Hong Kong grunge with X-Men style powers, this is your holy grail.

An edgy, gritty style of filmmaking gives a real 'in your face' texture to a story more similar, perhaps, to fans of Firestarter, than to fans of X-Men, although in this case, the execution of the action takes a leaf form its setting and gives it a Hong Kong style of fight choreography and action-plus action.

Giving The Gift of Sci Fi: Stargate SG-1

Christmas time is descending upon us like a voracious Gundark eager not to have its ears pulled. Panic is starting to set in.

Sure, you can always take the easy, clever and rather delightful path that begins with giving the gift of a SCI FI Channel subscription to those nearest and dearest who haven't discovered the joys of Channel 125 yet. Not a bad option at all.

;)

However, you could also consider giving the gift of shows that you see on SCI FI.

One of the all time SCI FI faves, and one of the longest running Sci Fi shows in history, is Stargate SG1. Currently in it's third evolution on SCI FI as Stargate Universe, Stargate SG1 is a classic adventure story that lovers of Sci Fi need very little introduction to. The continuing adventures of Jack O'Nell, Samantha Carter, Daniel Jackson and Teal'c, and then later, Cameron Mitchell and Vala Mal Doran, (and let's not forget Jonas Quinn!) have enthralled and delighted for ten seasons and two movies - and you can see them all in the Stargate SG1 Portal Collection.

Take a look, if you will, at Stargate Atlantis. SGA to its friends.

Star Trek on BD/DVD Review

Starring Christopher Pyne, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, Leonard Nimoy, Bruce Greenwood, Eric Bana
Director JJ Abrams
Rated PG
Out Oct 29

It's pretty obvious to everyone that Star Trek was a successful film - creatively and at the box office. It's a shared triumph for geeks everywhere, and a bridge between the Star Wars and Star Trek tribes of Sci Fi lovers. A gateway, too, perhaps, for many young people to the original series. In many ways, with so much riding on it, it's release this year was not just another movie release. It was an affirmation that Star Trek is for everyone. The ideals behind it, but also the 'come with us for the ride' call that has been so often ignored by mainstream audiences has now been answered.

Wolverine on BD/DVD Review

Starring Hugh Jackman, Liev Schrieber, Danny Huston, Ryan Reynolds
Director Gavin Hood
Rated M
Released Oct 14

Based on fairly sketchy material to begin with, the story of Wolverine's journey from an unkillable blade-waving mutant to an unkillable armoured blade-waving mutant isn't one that is brimming with subtlety and rich variations on the emotional landscape. By including such hoary cliches as 'hero walks from explosion' 'hero walks into sunset with girl in arms' 'Mendozaaaaaaaa! scream into the sky' there's a pretty good indicator that he's not trying to satisfy an audience who has a great experience of film or who crave originality. A film like this doesn't have to, though.

Stargate SG1: Children of the Gods - Final Cut Review

Stargate: SG1 - Children of the Gods - Final Cut
Starring Richard Dean Anderson, Michael Shanks, Amanda Tapping, Christopher Judge
Director Mario Azzopardi
Rated M
Out Now

It was late 1997 that Stargate:SG1 first appeared on TV screens. Since then it has confounded conventional wisdom about Sci Fi shows by drawing major audiences in mainstream time slots, and now with a third spinoff scheduled for October, shows little signs of slowing down.

Watchmen on BD and DVD

Starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Malin Akerman, Billy Crudup, Carla Gugino
Directory Zack Snyder
Rated MA 15+
Released Jul 29

THIS IS A REVIEW OF THE 2-DISC SPECIAL EDITION ON BD and DVD.

This is a lavishly shot super-production that is as faithful as any true believer of Dave Gibbons and Alan Moore's original could hope to see.

Which means, as a Hollywood Blockbuster, it's one hell of an anomaly. The traditional experience of the comic book movie is turned on its head. The usual lines that separate good and evil are blurred beyond recognition, and the the touchstones that we usually use when watching this kind of movie are missing.
