The Week in Geek Issue # 104

Hello dear readers!

That's right readers, we're back from our plague enforced break and raring to go! Outside of being ill, the writer's been planting the seeds of geekdom by trying to convince his 3 year old godson that Doctor Who is cooler that Thomas the Tank Engine. It hasn't worked yet, but there's time…

Be warned though, we've got a lot to cover today (Especially in the world of television) so you might want to grab a bite to eat and a drink. Are y...
I love sexy screenshots of upcoming games, don't you?

Coming in 2013, Crysis 3 is powered by Crytek’s proprietary CryENGINE and boldly claims to advance the gaming state of the art with unparalleled visuals and incomparable shooter sandbox gameplay.

If you're looking for something a little bit different, the world of Crysis gives fans of shooters something other than a gun to shoot with.

Taking place in 2047, Prophet returns to New York City on a revenge mission only to discover that the city has been encased in a nanodome (Liberty Dome) and has become overgrown with trees, dense swamplands and raging rivers – a veritable urban rainforest.

Quiet Eye - Prometheus Viral Vid Number 2 Is Here

The latest Prometheus Viral Vid is finally here - featuring Noomi Rapace as Dr Elizabeth Shaw, it's called 'Quiet Eye'.

This video interview in a futuristic version of Skype points to one of the less well known speculations of Prometheus (one held by scriptwriter Damon Lindelof) - that the Alien Universe and the Bladerunner Universes are not just similar, but shared.

The 'Yutani' polygraph software used in the 'Quiet Eye' program looks like a good match for the Voight-Kampff test used by Rick Deckard to spot replicants. As a visual lie-detector, the 'Quiet Eye' is a bit of a step up, however.

Bait 3D - Tsunamis + Tiger Sharks = Awesome

You may remember a little while ago talk about the upcoming Aussie horror film, Bait.

Bait has an exciting ensemble cast showcasing some of Australia's hottest stars in Hollywood including: Xavier Samuel (A Few Best Men, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, Sanctuary) Sharni Vinson (You're Next, Blue Crush 2, Step Up 3D) Alex Russell (Chronicle, Wasted on the Young) and Lincoln Lewis (Underbelly, Tomorrow When the War Began).

The film is directed by Kimble Rendall, and produced by Russell Mulcahy, and has been in the works since 2009.

Is 4 Minutes of Spider-Man Too Much?

No. Not really.

Unless of course you're one of those people who don't want to know anything at all about the upcoming blockbuster films of 2012. In which case, what are you doing on the internet?

Mission: Impossible - spend time on the internet and not get sucked into the latest news, video and pics from the biggest movies of the year.

Take one such movie - 'The Amazing Spider-Man'.

Whilst it's having a tough time competing for nerdsquee alongside The Dark Knight Rises and Prometheus, it's doing a pretty reasonable job by coming out all guns blazing with a trailer that is four minutes long. It's a combination of traditional trailer intercuts and an extended sequence that goes a long way in explaining just why Spidey was hanging onto a burning car that was dangling from a bridge. All will be revealed, should you choose to see this video.

Damon Lindelof Talks Prometheus

Prometheus opens in Australia in just a few short weeks - June 8, to be exact.

It's incredible to think that the journey that has been the anticipation to this movie is almost over.

Entertainment Weekly got the scoop with some great pics from the set of Prometheus, which they combined with an interview with scriptwriter Damon Lindelof.

He gives quite a bit of information about the philosophy of the film, and the motivations of the characters. If you've seen the trailers (you're welcome) then you know that Noomi Rapace plays Dr Elizabeth Shaw, who's going to be the centre of the story.

Supanova will continue it's 10th Anniversary year soon with the upcoming events in Sydney (June 16 & 17) and Perth (June 23 & 24).

Since its Sydney debut in 2002, the independently-run Australian-owned expo has expanded to six cities (Melbourne, Gold Coast, Sydney, Perth, Brisbane and Adelaide).

If you've never been to a Supanova, then you're missing out on meeting your favourite stars from film, TV, anime, comics and geek culture.

All you need to do is tell us in 25 words or less: “Why you are looking forward to seeing Iron Sky?

You may have heard about Wil Wheaton's reaction to Aaron (BSG) Douglas' question at last weekend's London Star Trek Convention that saw the entire cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation reunite for the first time in years.

Wheaton left The Next Generation after four seasons, leaving the rest of the cast to finish the series and make four feature films. During the reunion, Battlestar Galactica‘s Aaron Douglas asked him what it felt like to rejoin his castmates on stage. Wheaton responded with what became an emotional answer.

“I left Star Trek: The Next Generation when I was 18 years old, and initially I thought that it was a really smart business, career move. In some ways it was, and in more ways it wasn’t. What I was unprepared for was how much I was going to miss the people that are on this stage, and how much I was going to miss the spacesuit that I hated wearing and the helmet hair that I couldn’t stand,” Wheaton said.

Wheaton today, appearing on Eureka

Though he made occasional guest appearances on the show in later seasons and appeared in the final TNG-era film, Nemesis, Wheaton said he felt “ashamed” about his departure, even to the point that he felt embarrassed to visit the set, or to invite the rest of the cast to his wedding. In later years, when he tried to apologize to his former Enterprise shipmates, Wheaton said every one of them had a warm response.

“To a person, everyone said ‘Yeah, you were a kid. You were always welcome. You were always part of us.’

“To be here tonight, for me, it’s very, very much for me, it’s like coming home.”

As the crowed cheered, Marina Sirtis ran across the stage to give Wheaton a teary hug, while Brent Spiner reached across to shake his hand. The only person who didn’t get all sappy was LeVar Burton, who went for the laugh.

“To tell you the God’s honest truth, you were a pain in the ass,” Burton said. “But I’m glad you’re here, because you’re our pain in the ass.”

May The 4th Be With You!

What was once a fun thing just for hardcore Star Wars fans is now a ritual for anyone interested in Science Fiction, popular culture, or just being 'with it'.

The ultimate date/Star Wars quote mashup for 2012 has arrived - it IS (in Australia - wait for it America...) May the 4th, so now we can all go around saying 'May the 4th be with you' and snigger because we know that even Han Solo grudgingly said 'May the Force be with you', so it must be cool.

There are sooooo many Star Wars funny pics out there that it's tough to think up something interesting that you haven't seen, or perhaps something interesting that you have seen.
