But sometimes that line that gets crossed becomes crystal clear. Especially when food is involved. Or Jar Jar Binks. Of course, when we speak of Jar Jar Binks we speak of Star War's most loveable not-annoying character, like ever, a creature who is a living window into the soul of simple folk, a touchstone for the downtrodden and the dispossessed.

SCI FI PI recently visited the headquarters for planet Earth's special effects, at ILM, tromping the corridors amongst the legendary bric-a-brac of a thirty years of ground-breaking movie magic.
Here's Part 3 in our special 3 Part feature.
The other cool thing that’s just around the corner for filmmakers is digital insertion during filming.
What that means is, I can, as a director, look through my camera monitor and see my hero running from the digitally created robosaurus and flying organo-missiles, literally as I film the actual shot of the hero running through the frame. The special effects team can render in a rough version of the CGI so I know exactly where everything is supposed to be, so that my actor knows just where they must insert the sword to slay the robosuarus, and just when they must duck form the bat-winged organo-missles.

Davey Jones, first and second draft. These are the models scanned to create the final digital character in the Pirates of the Caribbean films.
The first thing you see as you drive through the Presidio’s gates is brick fence posts and a sign indicating the military heritage. Rolling green hills and parkland bring to mind (oddly enough) Sydney’s Quarantine Station, but instead of sparsely dotted relics, one sees large five-storied buildings, recantangularly horizontal, roofed like a house and covered in a regular grid of square windows, almost like giant lattice.

When people from Australia discuss visiting San Francisco, they invariably point out that it’s “just like Sydney”. For the most part, this statement is rubbish. Whilst both cities have many things in common – iconic bridges, stunning harbours and vibrant subcultures, there is a sense of the dramatic that San Francisco holds, from its ridiculously vertical hills, its sharp weather and its dark underbelly that Sydney doesn’t come close to matching. It’s not odd then, that a city born of earthquakes, skullduggery and failed gold rush dreams should also be home to the Vatican of explosive film-making, ILM.

Experience! the pathos of one man's struggle against self doubt, self loathing and a day manager who's a bit of a bully!
Feel! the raw powaah of the force as it rips through the grocery section!
"I sense there's a clean-up in aisle five..."
With the SCI FI Forum alive with talk of retro Sci Fi, it seemed only sweet and fitting to scour the net for good examples or trailers of some classic Sci Fi of yesteryear.
The thing that really strikes you when you look upon these clips is, firstly, just how tremendous genre theme music can be, and secondly (but more importantly) just how thin the line between Sci Fi TV themes and bass-slapping porn stylin' really is.
Wafer thin.
Enjoy the goodness, and for those who have never seen anything even remotely like this before, now you can begin to understand what all those fogies are going on about.
The penultimate chapter in the Chad Vader saga will have everyone on the edge of their seats. Or at least guffumping into their coffees with unexpected splashes of mirth. Chad is desperate to get his job back as day manager, and with the help of his young apprentice 'Commander Wickstrom' he may just get it.
Although, as usual, it is the customers at the Empire market who must pay.
It looks like Chad might finally win the day, but first of course, he must deal with his nemesis - Clint. Which is going to be a little tricky because Clint is actually played by Matt Sloan, who is in fact, Chad Vader.
Chad goes job hunting!
Chad must use the power of the force to land a decent job, but finds himself unable to hold down employment. Look out for the Chad in the cubicle next to you!
Oh, and if your photocopier seems to have been dismembered by a light sabre - yep. Vader strikes again!
Poor Chad!
Life has gotten a little out of control, and so has our Dark Lord of the Sith, who gets a little tipsy and takes his lameness factor from Code Orange to Code Red.
But, when the worst comes to the worst, there's always a small Ewok of hope.
Cuddle that Ewok, Chad. Cuddle it.
Dare we say it?
Yes we do!
"Yattah!"
With Heroes Season 3: Villains just days away from its launch in the US, we managed to snaffle up two of the biggest stars of the show, Milo Ventimiglia and Masi Oka, whilst they were in Australia on a 48 hour whistlestop tour as they took a break between filming the latest season of the Sci Fi blockbuster. And now it's gone live in Spectrum.
Avid readers of Sci Fi Pi will already know that we've seen the first Episode of Season 3, and that all the waiting will be worth it.
