SCI FI PI visited the new Underworld movie, which is currently being shot in giant warehouses in the outskirts of Auckland and is posting this from a hotel room in the land of the long white cloud.

The prequel to the Underworld movies, Underworld: Rise of the Lycans, takes us back in time for swashbuckling mediaeval vampires vs werewolves action.

Directed by famed production designer, Patrick Tatopolous, the film features the return of Michael Sheen as Lucian and Bill Nighy as Viktor, and sees the full appearance of Sonja, Viktor's daughter, vampire lover of werewolf Lucian and cause of all the fuss that is the thousand year war between wolf and bat, played by Rhona Mitra.

What Jj Abrams Did Next

NEWS

Friday, February 22

by Captain

Rumours have not so much been confirmed about JJ Abrams' next project, but solidified. The man behind Cloverfield, Lost, Alias, Mission:Impossible 3 and the upcoming Star Trek motion picture is turning back to TV - in a big way.

And, oddly enough, in a familiar way.

It's not a remake of the X-Files, so to speak, but an update. If you love the X-Files (c'mon, of course you do!) then get ready for the Abrams spin. Casting is currently being finalised, and scriptwriting can now begin in earnest after the recent strike. Stay tuned for official releases and info on the upcoming TV-series, but don't expect to see anything until late 2009, early 2010 at the earliest.

With the Oscars looking very similar to your parents' house the day before they came back from holidays after leaving you in charge for two weeks and promising NOT to have any wild parties, the good old Saturn Awards have been chugging along without the fuss and bother that comes with having to get Jon Stewart to host your show.

Celebrating all that is Sci Fi (and genre) on the big screen and the small screen (and at home) over the past year, the Saturn Awards have become, after more than 30 years, the indisputable Sci Fi Oscars. This year (2007) sees strong voting for 300 (10), the latest Harry Potter film (9) and Tim Burton's Sweeney Todd with a surprising 8 nominations.

Entertainment stalwart Variety has just let rip with super irritating anti-Star Trek news, with the announcement that Paramount are adding 5 months to our wait time for more big screen Trek.

The potential for bigger earnings was cited as the reason, with less competition in May than at peak movie time over Christmas. Says Variety: "Star Trek" has no competition in its new slot -- at least not so far, although it opens one week after 20th Century Fox bows "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" and one week before Sony is slated to bow sequel "Angels and Demons."

Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic has unveiled models of the new SpaceShipTwo, the craft that will take six passengers (at $USD 200,000 a pop) and two crew into space for five minutes at a time.

Test flights for the new craft are slated for this year.

The plan is simple – the whole kit and caboodle will fly to 15 kilometres up into the air. 747’s currently cruise at around 10 kilometres up. Then SpaceShipTwo will separate from Knight Two and blast off into space –just under the legal orbiting limit where it becomes hard to come back down without re-entry shields, retro rockets et al.
