Joss Whedon Says Serenity Was Firefly Season 2

Earlier today we sat in the southernmost sail of the Sydney Opera House and had a quick chat with Mr Joss Whedon.

Australian fans, he says "hi".

In a brief video interview (to be aired on SCI FI) Joss discussed the finer points of Buffy, Angel and Firefly.

We did also ask him about The Avengers. At the moment, with his trip to Australia and being caught up between a bout of insomnia and jetlag, he's using hotel rooms and aeroplanes as the perfect writing platform. We asked him about whether Marvel was hands on or hands off, given that a) he's Joss Whedon and b) he's got a pretty decent resume when it comes to the comics world, having penned a series of Astonishing X-Men books, Firefly and Buffy Season 8 comics. And c) he wrote the script to The First Avenger: Captain America.

The Week in Geek Issue #25

Welcome dear readers!

What’s going on? This is Thursday! Well, we’re coming to you a day early this week as the writer will be spending tomorrow doing one of his favorite things in the world – moving house!

That’s sarcasm readers, in case you weren’t sure.

This week also see’s James Cameron *cough* grabbing for more money *cough* bowing to popular demand by releasing Avatar: Special Edition to cinemas. First off: tacking on a piddling 8 minutes of footage (It’s already near 3 hours long…) is something for the DVD and whilst I enjoyed the film it wasn’t compelling enough for me to sit through again in a cinema. And from reports the 8 minutes isn’t that flash – for those of you looking for the much discussed Jake/Neytiri love scene (You know who you are…) it’s virtually blink and you’ll miss it.

Transmission Films announced today that their film, Griff The Invisible, has been selected to screen at the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival (September 9-19), where it will have its world premiere.

Griff the Invisible is an original comedic superheroic love story from the wildly fertile imagination of debut feature film writer/director, Australian Leon Ford. Leon is no stranger in front of the camera, having been seen in The Pacific, Beneath Hill 60, All Saints and Changi. For his first time behind the camera, he's gone into unfamiliar territory for most Australian directors.

“We’re so excited about unleashing our film to the world at such a popular international film festival,” said Ford. “The film is a little unusual and something quite different. It’s a super hero movie and it is a comedy, but at its core it’s a simple love story about two very unique individuals finding each other and giving the other the strength to be what they want to be. The performances are all brilliant and the chemistry between the two leads is something quite beautiful and rare, so I hope audiences respond to that in the film.”

Quite Possibly The Best News You'll Hear Today

Collider is reporting that Chris Wedge, director of Ice Age, has acquired the rights to the book 'Lives of Monster Dogs' through his company, WedgeWorks.

Sure, sounds pretty good, but what's the big wahoo?

Well - if you'd read the book, you'd be pretty excited. The story, as The Hollywood Reporter's Heatvision blog puts it, “revolves around a group of soldier dogs genetically engineered by mad Prussian scientists hiding in a Canadian village. The hyper-intelligent dogs, who walk erect and use voice boxes to communicate, revolt against their masters and, dressed in 19th century formal wear, show up in modern New York. The book is told through the eyes of a NYU student who becomes the chronicler of the dogs’ glamorous lives, which, as they revert to their animal states for longer and longer periods, turn tragic.”

Welcome dear readers!

It being the final week before an election I’ve been reminded of the late, great Douglas Adams, more specifically the following section from The Restaurant at the End of the Universe:

"The major problem—one of the major problems, for there are several—one of the many major problems with governing people is that of whom you get to do it; or rather of who manages to get people to let them do it to them.
To summarize: it is a well-known fact that those people who must want to rule people are, ipso facto, those least suited to do it.
To summarize the summary: anyone who is capable of getting themselves made President should on no account be allowed to do the job."
You might have guessed I don’t have an optimistic view of politics. You’d be right.

Dracula: Aussie As

The next big-screen blockbuster version of Dracula will be an Australian affair.

Australian Sam Worthington will star in Dracula: Year Zero, directed by Australian Alex Proyas, and it will be filmed in Australia. Go Australia!

The news was announced at the Australian International Movie Convention yesterday, and reported by Encore's website, where the news was subsequently taken down.

We're not sure why, perhaps they were asked not to share the info that the film will be shot early 2011 (Collider reports June) for a Christmas/January 2012 release, or perhaps the deal hasn't been fully inked yet and Universal doesn't want to jinx it.

Rose Byrne Adorning X-Men: First Class

Aussie actress Rose Byrne is in final negotiations to join the upcoming X-Men origins movie.

Shooting will commence at the end of August on X-Men: First Class, which will cover the early years of Charles Xavier's College for Gifted Children. The film will be directed by Matthew Vaughn, who was given the X-Men slot after the success of his skewed but brilliant super-hero parody film, Kick-Ass. Vaughn had previously been kicked off X-Men 3 before Brett Ratner came on board to make the worst film in the series (so far).

Hello dear readers!

Let me ask you a question: what’s got two thumbs and tickets to Iron Maiden?

*points to self with thumbs* Yep, that’s right, moi. Envy me.

I’ve also managed to catch Centurion this week, which made me extremely happy. Ancient Britons vs the might of Rome? I’m sold. In short: it’s brutal, blood soaked, exhausting (It’s only 97 minutes!) and with some of the most gorgeous scenery that you’ll find outside of Middle Earth, sorry, New Zealand (It was filmed in Scotland and looked freezing). Most shockingly of all, the arms and armour are mostly correct – sure they’re carrying spears instead of pilum, but who’s going to spot that outside of people like me?

Spielberg's Terra Nova to be shot in Queensland

Anna Bligh, Premiere of Queensland, has announced that Steven Spielberg's Terra Nova will be filming in Australia.

"Fox Broadcasting has today confirmed Queensland as the location of choice for 'Terra Nova'... and once again shows Queensland's ability to attract first rate productions to the state," Bligh said.

"My government provided considerable incentives through Screen Queensland to secure this production which, in turn, will generate in excess of AUS$54 million ($50 million) in economic activity and create thousands of jobs," she added.

Recent unconfirmed rumours surfacing from the V gang's appearance at Comic-Con have pointed to Jane Badler's involvement in the upcoming second season of V.

Happily for fans of the new and old series, we can confirm that one of Sci Fi's great villains will return - after speaking directly with Jane herself. She says "Yes, absolutely" so, there you have it - straight from the lizard's mouth, so to speak, says Jane: "I am off on Tuesday for a long stint".

This morning's email confirmation will not come as a huge shock to Melbourne Sci Fi fans who were in the audience at ACMI's evening of Sci Fi Remakes and Spinoffs Thursday a week ago, who were teased with Jane's involvement - at the time, she could not confirm as the final nod from producers had not been given.
