GADGETS

Monday, November 17

by Captain

With Terminator Salvation principal photography completed, it's time to sit back and relax as the post-production kicks in and the pre-release hype kick starts!

With Aussie Sam Worthington (recently referred to in the US trades as an imported 'real man') going head to head with superstar Christian Bale, we're looking at a film heavy on action and heavy on cool looking tech.

If you aren't convinced that number four in the franchise is going to make you reassess all things Skynet, check these pics out!

Big news for internet users - possibly less so for Australian internet users.

In the US, the FCC earlier this week approved the use of the so-called "white spaces" between television channels for wireless Internet access, thereby setting in motion the creation of a nationwide broadband service that will eventually be available to users without charge any place where television signals can be received.

The system is expected to be slower than cable or DSL but comparable to the speed of mobile phone systems. Receivers are expected to be built into laptop computers and other mobile devices by next year.

Star Wars Dollar Bill Origami

GADGETS

Friday, October 31

by Captain

People sometimes say that Americans and/or Sci Fi fans are a little bit 'special'. Or to put it more bluntly, scarily, dangerously nuts. We of course disagree, and say that diversity and unique creativity are the things in life that make life interesting, and in fact, make those people far more interesting than the drone-like masses who ignore both their inner child and of course, Science Fiction. At their peril. For they miss out on the joy of life that comes with Star Wars Dollar Bill Origami.

World's Coolest Keyboard

GADGETS

Friday, September 26

by Captain

Sure the concept of a computer keyboard being 'cool' is something alien to many of us. Many of us may consider the idea of having anything more interesting than the slab of plastic that Dell sent to you as a complete and utter waste of time.

But some of us beg to differ.

Some of us embrace the geeky. And we loves the sexiness of this here keyboard. The Luxeed Dynamic Pixel LED Keyboard (or the LDP LED Keyboard, as we like to call it) comes with a fully customizable colour set.

The TV Experience Of The Future - Today

GADGETS

Friday, August 29

by Captain

It seems these days that the future of the television is something is so amorphous, so dishearteningly 'liquid' that it hardly seems worth the trouble to go and buy that 16:9 LCD or Hi Def Plasma, or Oled, or projector. What with the future replacing the past so rapidly, it seems like once you actually settled down on one particular TV, by the time you've bought it, it's already obsolete.

But those days will soon be over. Advances in technology now mean that the latest LCD and Plasmas are almost as good to look at (in picture quality) as the trusty old CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) TV's that many of our older readers will remember from the 1990's. And TV makers are getting more and more innovative - making it not just about sight or sound, but sight and sound - and in the future, evne the actual physical sensation of being in or at or participating in the actual activity you're watching?

The Olympics Go Sci Fi!

GADGETS

Saturday, August 16

by Captain

With the Olympics in full tilt, it falls on us at SCI FI to point out that without futuristic technology the whole 'higher, faster stronger' thing would still be nothing more than a dream for the world's athletes. We won't mention the leaps and bounds in genetic manipulation, hormone 'therapy' and chemistry that may also be 'assisting' the athletes in their dreams of Olympic gold, because, as we all know, and honest politicians have told us this, that sort of thing just doesn't happen. Until someone gets caught.

D’oh!

New Scientist reports that the UK will be the first country where a polite approach to illegal downloading of music and video will soon be under way. A new government plan will be implemented, in league with the six biggest internet providers.

The first phase of the plan – letters. That’s right, letters will be sent to those people who are downloading pirated music and video. If you’re a kid, your parents will get the letter.

A three-month trial period will kick off with the letters, and if there is no reduction in downloading, further measures are being considered. These include a ‘three strikes and you’re out” system (out of the internet!) or filtering to prevent material from being downloaded illegally.
