Dark City: The Director's Cut On Blu-Ray Review

BLU-RAY / DVD

Wednesday, October 1

by Captain

Released Oct 2
Starring Rufus Sewell, Jennifer Connolly, Keifer Sutherland, William Hurt, Colin Friels, David Wenham, Melissa George, Richard O'Brien, Bruce Spence, Ian Richardson
Directed by Alex Proyas
Rated M

Alex's Proyas' 1998 film is one of those rare films that not only stand the test of time, but do better for it. The Director's Cut is an excellent opportunity for those who remember the film fondly to revisit the magic, tidied up, smartened up and without the Blade Runner voice over that was deemed necessary for it's theatrical release. The result is a film that is dreamlike, beautiful and intellectually stimulating. Not bad for a low-budget Sci Fi thriller!

Rated MA 15+

After what seems to have been an eternity, the almost mythical Battlestar Galactica: Razor has finally been released on DVD in Australia.

Was the wait worth it?

Yes it was.

For those Battlestar Galactica fans who for some reason hadn't previously purchased it from Amazon, yes it worth whatever price local retailers are selling it for. Whilst it is a 'standalone' or 'season break' movie (fans of Babylon 5 will instantly recognise the format) it is also an integral part of the BSG canon, forming key moments for the saga that unfolds in the regular TV series.

Season 4 is where Atlantis really hit its straps. By combining two enemies into its major story arc and introducing a new character, it really is one of those stand out seasons where a great deal happened to the characters that SGA fans have come to know and love.

Thursday, August 7

by Captain

Released Aug 6
Starring Dan Castellenata, Stephen Hawking, David Cross, Brittany Murphy, Billy West, Katey Sagal, John DiMaggio, Maurice LaMarche
Directed by Peter Avanzino

If you love your schlocky 50's Sci Fi, you'll love this new Futurama feature. It also helps if you're a Futurama fan!

Whilst Bender's Big Score was more about edifying fans than electrifying the world as the return of Futurama to our small screens, The Beast With a Billion Backs, the second in the four feature Futurama DVD adventure is a more of a well rounded exploration of the joy of Science Fiction with a whopping great big tale that's sure to be more of a crowd pleaser this time.

THE GOA'ULD ARE SCARY AGAIN!

Released Aug 6
Starring: Ben Browder, Amanda Tapping, Christopher Judge, Michael Shanks, Claudia Black, Richard Dean Anderson, Cliff Simon, Don S. Davis, Beau Bridges
Directed by Martin Wood
Rated M

Available on Blu-ray and DVD.

Whilst Ark of Truth was purported to be the real 'Gater' film, finishing off the 10 year series with a tying up of the final Ori storyline, it is Continuum, oddly enough, that feels more like a fan celebration of the Stargate series, as it reintroduces a host of fan fave characters (both good and evil) even whilst it retains its 'standalone' and 'first time viewers' storyline.

Have we got some Jumping Jumper Footage for you!

The Hayden Christensen starrer is out now on DVD and Blu-ray , and comes packed with extras.

Whilst the film didn't quite manage to add up the sum of it's hype, it's still an excellent example of cool special effects and a pretty decent Sci Fi concept.

When it comes to animation, Batman has a long and illustrious history, often providing a platform for groundbreaking talent. Anyone who's seen the iconic Art-Deco inspired Batman: The Animated series would quite possibly agree.

Batman - Gotham Knight not only adds to the pantheon, but tops it. This collection of stories combines the top talent of Japanese Anime with Hollywood's best screenwriters. Ostensibly, it's the 'bridge' between Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, but it's also a playground for today's masters of animation to strut their stuff, in terms of both storytelling and art.

DR WHO - THE INFINITE QUEST

Released June 6
Starring David Tennant, Freema Agyeman, Anthony Head

Rated G

Here's a twist on a classic - it's Dr Who - only, it's animated!

Set during the action of the third series of the new Doctor Who (starring David Tennant as The Doctor and Freema Agyeman as Martha Jones) this is a fine example of what people are talking about when they say that when you animate Sci Fi, the budget becomes unlimited.

Batman Goes Manga!

In what looks like a very similar experiment to the Animatrix series, the people behind Batman Begins and The Dark Knight have commissioned a series of anime to track the journey of Bruce Wayne from one film to the next - and the results seem, at first glance, to be about as cool as cool can get. It's called Batman Gotham Knight, and will be soonishly available on DVD and Blu-ray.

In Oz, we can get it July 2.

Here's the official WB trailer. Try to remain continent.
