Batman - Gotham Knight Dvd Review

by Captain

Released July 3
Starring the voice talents of: Kevin Conroy, David McCallum, Corey Feldman
Directors Yasuhiro Aoki, Futoshi Higashide, Toshiyuki Kubooka, Hiroshi Morioka, Jong-Sik Nam and Shoujirou Nishimi
Rated M

When it comes to animation, Batman has a long and illustrious history, often providing a platform for groundbreaking talent. Anyone who's seen the iconic Art-Deco inspired Batman: The Animated series would quite possibly agree.

Batman - Gotham Knight not only adds to the pantheon, but tops it. This collection of stories combines the top talent of Japanese Anime with Hollywood's best screenwriters. Ostensibly, it's the 'bridge' between Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, but it's also a playground for today's masters of animation to strut their stuff, in terms of both storytelling and art.

DR WHO - THE INFINITE QUEST

Released June 6
Starring David Tennant, Freema Agyeman, Anthony Head
Director Gary Russell
Rated G

Here's a twist on a classic - it's Dr Who - only, it's animated!

Set during the action of the third series of the new Doctor Who (starring David Tennant as The Doctor and Freema Agyeman as Martha Jones) this is a fine example of what people are talking about when they say that when you animate Sci Fi, the budget becomes unlimited.

Batman Goes Manga!

BLU-RAY / DVD

Wednesday, May 28

In what looks like a very similar experiment to the Animatrix series, the people behind Batman Begins and The Dark Knight have commissioned a series of anime to track the journey of Bruce Wayne from one film to the next - and the results seem, at first glance, to be about as cool as cool can get. It's called Batman Gotham Knight, and will be soonishly available on DVD and Blu-ray.

In Oz, we can get it July 2.

Here's the official WB trailer. Try to remain continent.

Wednesday, April 23

by Captain

Released on DVD
Starring Lea Thompson, Tim Robbins, Jeffrey Jones, Chip Zien (voice)
Director William Huyck
Rated PG

George Lucas has had his fair share of ups and downs. Looking no further than Star Wars will tell you that. However, locked deep in the 80's is a very special movie, the kind of flop that people only whisper about and only very very few people have ever seen.

Howard the Duck.

We've all seen the cover at the DVD store, walked past it with a small shudder of 'worst movie ever'. But is this 1986 made flop getting rough deal? Or is it as bad as they say? Now with the re-release of the DVD, you can decide for yourself. Or you can read our review and find out!

Beowulf On Blu-Ray Review

BLU-RAY / DVD

Tuesday, April 15

by Captain

Released on Blu-ray and DVD (Blu-ray reviewed)
Starring: Ray Winstone, Angelina Jolie, John Malkovich, Robin Wright Penn, Brendan Gleeson
Director: Robert Zemeckis
Rating: M

Beowulf on Blu-ray may not provide the ear-bleeding high octane impact of the 3D experience at Imax, but it's an impressive piece of entertainment for the home theatre crowd, and certainly a must-have for those who bend towards fantasy, action, adventure and CGI recreations of Angelina Jolie.

Director Robert C. Cooper
Released April 9

From the opening sweeping mix of the Stargate theme and an alien alpine landscape, you can tell that The Ark of Truth is bigger than the usual SG1 episodes. For those of us who have waited so long since the curtailed completion of Season 10, there's a Lord of the Rings grandeur to the opening titles, a mix of great expectation and relief. It's finally here.

DVD
Created by Glen A Larsen
Starring Lorne Greene, Herb Jefferson Jr, James Patrick Stuart, Kent McCord, Barry Van Dyke
Released March 3

For those revelling in the joy of the modern Battlestar Galactica, it's often easy to forget the less than stellar origins of its original incarnation. Glen A Larsen's 1978 show, whilst popular with younger viewers in its initial episodes, suffered from ever decreasing budgets and ratings until it was finally cancelled after 21 episodes. The journey from the twelve colonies to the mythical 'Earth' was tragically struck short, and fans clamoured at network heartlessness to no avail. But somehow, the show was reborn...

Futurama: Bender's Big Score

BLU-RAY / DVD

Friday, March 7

by Captain

DVD REVIEW Released March 6

It's always a time for celebration when a cancelled Sci Fi show (of excellent quality) re-emerges from the netherworld of cancellation and returns for our viewing pleasure. Futurama, despite being co-created by Matt Groening, was always the sickly step-child in The Simpsons' family, but had a hugely loyal fan-base who responded to the innest of in-jokes that truly allowed the geek to be unleashed.
