What would happened if the humans left earth, but left their robot running?

Pixar's latest looks to be, possibly, it's greatest. Set on a future earth where all the humans have left, this looks to be a touching tale of a robot and it's final, gargantuan 700 year long task. Throw in an EVE robot, and you have a little bit more. Hell, a lot more! This is one little robot, but one giant film.

If Pixar's track record is anything to go by, we're in safe hands for the animated flick of the year. It's coming to cinemas in Oz on September 28, but will be released in the US a few months earlier on June the 27th (dagnabbit!).

Superhero Movie Review

AT THE MOVIES

Thursday, April 10

by Captain

Starring Drake Bell, Sara Paxton, Leslie Neilsen, Christopher McDonald, Brent Spiner, Marion Ross
Director Craig Mazin
Rated M
Released April 10

One man's meat is another man's poison. One man's humour is another man's lifeless chunk of wasted time. Watching this film is a deeply personal exploration. There's no shame in laughing at it, or even with it. Whether it's funny or not is up to you. Is it a good movie? No. Will you enjoy it? That's really up to you.

The Spiderwick Chronicles Review

AT THE MOVIES

Wednesday, April 2

by Captain

Starring Freddie Highmore, Nick Nolte, David Strathairn, Mary Louise Parker, Martin Short
Director Mark Waters
Released April 3
Rated PG

The worst nightmare that your mother ever had was of you, running about the garden, with a big stick in your hand. But mother's terror was of course the electric lifeblood of your rich fantasy world. And it's this world that the Spiderwick Chronicles explores, the world that only children can see. Holly Black's immensely popular series of five books have been compressed into one film, which will prove a challenge for fans, but for those new to the world of Spiderwick, with a soft spot for 'fairies at the bottom of the garden' this is delightful film.

Speed Racer Pics And Trailer

Go Speed Racer!

The Wachowski Brothers are back, and rumour has it, are back better than ever. Speed Racer is a remake of the classic Japanese anime (before it was called anime) that some of our older SF fans may remember growing up with early on Saturday mornings (or occasionally as part of the after school double with Marine Boy).

Brrrrrmmmm!

What makes this cartoon to live action transition so unique is that it's actually still a cartoon - all the crazy over the top acting, voices and colours, but with live actors. As you can see in the trailer, the CGI looks terrific, and the action scenes should be intense. Look out for the film in Oz in June.

The Incredible Hulk Trailer

AT THE MOVIES

Tuesday, March 25

Edward Norton as the Incredible Hulk?

Yeah, why not? Following in the footsteps of even less likely super hero Michael Keaton as Batman, Mr Norton is set to thrill audiences as the green and angry Dr Bruce Banner. As the trailer suggests, another unlikely superhero movie star, Tim Roth appears as The Hulk's nemesis, the somewhat 'scarier than he sounds' Emil Blonsky. The brawny boondoggle awaits.

With Norton having input on the script, SF fans are eagre to see whether this restarting of the Hulk franchise will be accepted more willingly than Ang Lee's less than super duper attempt with Eric Bana. With a cast that includes Liv Tyler and William Hurt, and direction from Transporter 1 and 2's Louis Leterrier, anticipation teeters on a knife edge.

It's Mad Max 2 meets Escape From New York! Neil Marshall, director of The Descent and Dog Soldiers, has ripped Scotland apart and torn it a new apocalypse for this unapologetic romp through the end-of-the-world-as-we-know-it-but-I-feel-fine genre.

Starring Rhona Mitra, who is a one-eyed ass-whupping elite soldier sent to lead a hand picked team to find a cure for the deadly plague that threatens to kill millions, this has more gratuitous violence, cannibalism and surly attitudes than is good for you, but what the heck, we'll have some more!

10000 Bc Review

AT THE MOVIES

It's mammoth!

Released March 6
Starring Steven Strait, Camilla Belle, Cliff Curtis
Directed by Roland Emmerich
Rated M

Science Fiction fans have a leg-up on the rest of the audience when it comes to this latest offering from Roland Emmerich. Pity those fools who are struggling with the concepts of 'historical accuracy' and 'geographical accuracy'. If you've seen Stargate, you'll soon recognise that 10000 BC may look like it's on earth, but it's not. 10000 BC is a strange planet, far, far away, where the laws of logic are very similar to those in a Conan movie. Some may say 10000 BC is Conan the Barbarian meets Stargate, but we'd never say that. That's far too obvious. Like the film.

The Invasion Review - Sci Fi's Definitive Analysis

AT THE MOVIES

Friday, February 29

by Captain

Starring Nicole Kidman, Daniel Craig
Director Oliver Hirschbiegel
Rated M
Released Feb 28

Ah, The Bodysnatchers. It's a classic idea that has perforated us since first appearing in Jack Finney's serialised book in 1954, and later as the novel, The Bodysnatchers, in 1956. It first appeared on film as Don Siegel's 1956 film, Invasion of The Bodysnatchers, was remade with tremendous success in 1978 by Phillip Kaufman, less successfully in 1993 by Abel Ferrara, and now the tale has been told yet again by Oliver Hirschbiegel, the German director of The Experiment and Downfall.

Iron Man Trailer!

AT THE MOVIES

Thursday, February 28

by Captain

Yeeeeeeeeeeah! The Iron Man trailer! If you haven't seen this rockin sockin, glib and ever so cynical approach to the superhero genre, well you're livin' in the past, maaan. Robert Downey Jr looks to have won the first round of a year-long battle that will see Iron Man, Batman, The Incredible Hulk and Hellboy all go toe to toe with Indiana Jones. We'll find out if Tony Stark (a.k.a Iron Man) has what it takes, May 1, in Oz theatres.

May the best superhero (and/or demon) win! Fingers crossed the movies are as good as the trailers.

Bourne 4 Confirmed!

AT THE MOVIES

Monday, February 25

by Captain

You heard it here first!

A Universal exec has stated that both Paul Greengrass and Matt Damon are confirmed to have signed on for the next Bourne movie, as yet untitled.

Despite Damon's previous protestations about 'being done' with Jason Bourne, the final moments of The Bourne Ultimatum left the possibility for a follow up film, now the fourth in the hugely successful action series. The Bourne Ultimatum walked off with three Oscars last night, although its success came after the deals with the two major players were done.
