The Full Star Trek Trailer - In Hd!

AT THE MOVIES

Tuesday, November 18

by Captain

With the Star Trek full trailer running in front of Quantum of Solace in the US (and, hopefully, in Oz when it opens on Thursday) the very nice people at Paramount have unleashed the full sexy trailer onto the internet so that we can pore over it with a fine tooth comb and suck it's details dry for what now looks to be, officially, THE FILM of 2009.

Woohoo!

That's right Ewoks. This is the big one. The mix of known mythology, ramped up action, Top Gun stylin', time travel, super sexy tech and a simply unprecedented action level means that not only can it be confidently predicted that it will be the biggest Star Trek movie ever, giving birth to a new series (at a new level) of films, but that it will be up there at the end of 2009, alongside Avatar, Terminator Salvation and Watchmen - and we're predicting that it may be the biggest of all.

Mirrors Review

AT THE MOVIES

Friday, November 14

by Captain

Released Nov 6
Director Alexandre Aja
Starring Keifer Sutherland, Amy Smart, Jason Flemyng
Rated MA

Oh... there's that good script for 24 I was looking for! What's it doing up there?

Mirrors has come under a bit of pummelling from critics on its release, and some may say, fair enough. But if you've got a soft spot for the films of Dario Argento, then this ghost story may just be one of your all-time faves.

Alexandre Aja is a Frenchman who has remade the original Korean film into something that looks very much like a cult movie. There are quite a few in-jokes for horror fans, as well as a general 'relish' for the genre which shows that someone who loves horror movies is behind the camera.

New Watchmen Trailer Released

AT THE MOVIES

Wednesday, November 12

by Captain

With Zack Snyder's recent visit to Australia and the footage revealed therein, it comes as no surprise that the next phase of the Watchmen juggernaut shall now go into action - the second super trailer.

This one takes us from the 'cool moments of Watchmen' into a bit more of the story - 'who's killing the Watchmen?'. Building on the previous cool images and sequences, there's a few twists to what you've already seen - especially with a rather emotional Dr Manhanhattan.

No! Not a Smurf!

Get Into The Spirit Of Things

AT THE MOVIES

Monday, November 10

by Captain

Hard to believe that a 40's something comic could somehow be translated to present day filmed entertainment - and it seems that the rather tenuous response to The Spirit's previous trailers has seemed to bear out just how huge a leap that can be.

But if anyone can do it, Frank Miller can.

The legendary comic-meister turned film director has gone from his good work with Sin City and 300 and taking us somewhere a little bit old, a little bit sexy, and with a nice tie.

Have a look at these pics and start to feel good about The Spirit again.

Dying Breed Review

AT THE MOVIES

Thursday, November 6

by Captain

Released Nov 6
Director Jody Dwyer
Starring Leigh Wannell, Nathan Phillips, Sally McDonald, Mirrah Foulkes
Rated MA

Dying Breed is what is known in the horror genre as 'survival' horror.

Oweeee!

It's the classic city slickers in remote areas having to somehow survive not only the environment, but something icky trying to get them. The fun of this kind of movie comes from guessing who is next to go, and just how they will meet their grisly fate.

Fanboys Are Coming! Feel The Force!

AT THE MOVIES

Wednesday, November 5

by Captain

Fanboys is the ultimate Star Wars geekathon, and will be released in theatres in the US on February the 6th, 2009.

It tells the story of a group of friends, all equally obsessed with Star Wars and all equally thrilled about the upcoming release of Star Wars: Episode 1.

Ah, innocent times.

It's a road trip and a heist movie all rolled into the biggest geek-out you could possibly imagine, as the boys set out to steal Episode One from Skywalker Ranch itself.

This looks to be something that no Star Wars-literate Sci Fi fan can pass up.

Monsters Vs Aliens Trailer

AT THE MOVIES

Wednesday, November 5

by Captain

The people at Dreamworks are preparing to go into the 3D animation with a sense of panache - with their upcoming Monsters Vs Aliens.

The Earth (actually it's the US, as per) is under attack (again) by aliens and the only hope that the military has of defeating the nasty space aliens is by unleashing the awesome power of Earth's monsters, lead by a 50 ft woman, and including a gelatinous blob, a giant and rather nervous centipede, a 20000 year old fish man and an insectoid mad scientist (obviously).

by Captain

Released Oct 30
Starring Jason Statham, Joan Allen, Ian McShane, Tyrese Gibson Natalie Martinez
Director Paul W.S. Anderson
Rated MA 15 +

This film truly puts the car into carnage!

If you think that Paul WS Anderson is an unsung hero then this will probably another fine Sci-Fi film for you. If you do enjoy complex plots and characters with meaningful violence and believable scenarios, then perhaps this may not be your cup of tea. If you're looking for something that resembles a gigantic, rather bloody driving game, then you have hit nirvana.

Max Payne Film Review

AT THE MOVIES

Friday, October 17

by Captain

Director John Moore
Starring Mark Wahlberg, Mila Kunis, Beau Bridges
Rated MA 15 +
Released Oct 16

Funky Bunch Reunion. Denied.

Do you not have enough slo-mo gun play in your life? Feel a bit let down by the current crop of under-stylised violence as entertainment movies? Well huddle fearfully in the dark no more compadre - salvation is at hand!

It's easy to be mean to this game to movie translation - but there's a lot to like - if you like that sort of thing. What looked to be a tectonic shift in the game to movie crossover genre has actually come out with a twist - the game has gone to the movie - and on to the comic book. That is essentially what Max Payne is - a comic book movie, filled with comic book heroes, comic book villains and the spectacular visuals that you'd expect in a top notch graphic novel.
