SCI FI PI

WHAT’S ON THIS WEEK JULY 26 - AUG 1

’Tis the week to enjoy the goodness that only Sci Fi can bring. We’ve a veritable cornucopia of shows for you to enjoy, so much so, that we’re just going to point out that if you tune in this weekend, you can watch Eureka, Demons and Back to the Future.

Sweet.

If you’ve not seen Eureka yet, this is what it’s all about:

As World War II came to a close with mushroom clouds over Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the impact that science and technology would have on the continued security of our world became catastrophically apparent. America nearly lost the race to build the atomic bomb; it could not risk such a close call again.

With the help of Albert Einstein and other trusted advisors, President Harry S. Truman commissioned a top-secret residential development in a remote area of the Pacific Northwest, one that would serve to protect and nurture America's most valuable intellectual resources. There our nation's greatest thinkers, the über-geniuses working on the next era of scientific achievement, would be able to live and work in a supportive environment.

The best architects and planners were commissioned to design a welcoming place for these superlative geniuses to reside, an area that would offer the best education for their children, the best healthcare, the best amenities and quality of life.

A community was created to rival the most idyllic of America's small towns, with one major difference: this town would never appear on any maps. At least, none that haven't been classified "eyes only" by the Pentagon.

Thus, the town of Eureka was born. But for all its familiar, small-town trappings, things in this secret hamlet are anything but ordinary. The stereotype of the absent-minded professor exists for a reason, and most of the quantum leaps in science and technology during the past 50 years were produced by Eureka's elite researchers. Unfortunately, scientific exploration is rarely what one expects, and years of experiments gone awry have yielded some peculiar by-products.

From unrequited love to professional jealousy, from addiction to depression, the problems of Eureka's townsfolk stem from life's myriad of everyday challenges. But with the population's unique talents, troubled psyches and limitless resources, these small-town concerns have a way of becoming big-time problems. It is at that intersection, where human frailty and super-science collide, that Eureka begins….

Make sure, really sure, that you watch it, Fridays at 8:30pm and Saturdays at 6:30pm

This week (actually, tonight) marks the return of Demons!

Luke Rutherford (Christian Cooke) is just an average London teenager trying to live an ordinary life of going to school and parties. However, when his dead father’s best friend, Rupert Galvin (Philip Glenister) unexpectedly enters his life, Luke’s ordinary existence quickly turns extraordinary. Rupert is a demon hunter from America with a sarcastic sense of humour. But one thing Rupert takes seriously is convincing his godson, Luke, that he is the great-grandson of the legendary Abraham Van Helsing which subsequently puts Luke in charge of slaying the gathering dark forces.

With the assistance of Mina Harker, a blind concert pianist and authority on half-lives such as demons, vampires, zombies and werewolves, Rupert teaches Luke how to conquer the half-lives. Luke’s best friend, Ruby, joins the action and it’s not long before the four are walking the streets of London fighting the demons that lurk in the most unexpected places.

But a dangerous vampire, Gladiolu Thrip (Mackenzie Crook) has also discovered Luke’s secret. Does Gladiolu have enough power to prevent Luke from fulfilling his job of protecting London?

Catch Demons, Sundays at 6:00pm

Back To The Future in on this week!

This year, can you believe it, marks the 25th anniversary of Back To The Future, and it’s still as brilliant as ever.

If you’re a big, big fan, you can join in to the awesomeness of the ultimate BTTF reunion, here: http://www.weregoingback.com/

If you’ve never seen the film, do yourself a favour, and set your time travelling and SCI FI Channel watching co-ordinates to Sunday at midday and 10:15pm.

Michael J. Fox stars as Marty McFly, a restless '80s teen who takes a ride in Doc Brown’s (Christopher Lloyd) "flux capacitor"-rigged DeLorean and ends up in 1955. Once on the ground, Marty meets his teenaged mother (Lea Thompson) and accidentally wins her affections, thereby threatening the relationship she’s supposed to form with his father (the delightfully geeky Crispin Glover). Now it’s a do-or-never-be-born situation: Marty must get his parents to fall in love before Doc Brown can send him back to the proper decade.

Sunday, August 1 at 12:00pm and 10:15pm. Don’t miss it!
