Skyping with Warehouse 13's Saul Rubinek

Probably one of the most interesting interviews about acting and an actor's life that you will ever see. Enjoy.

A consummate storyteller, Saul Rubinek stars in Warehouse 13.

We've all seen countless interviews with slick Hollywood stars answering stock questions. We here at Sci Fi Pi understand how the world works, but at the same time, we want to change it, just a little. That's why we've started doing Skype interviews - the immediacy of the chat, that direct, face-to-face communication is something that seems to lend an air of authenticity to the exchange. However, with all new things, one wonders - will the people like it, will it work?

Well, we think we might have the interview that says 'yes, it does work'.

Saul Rubinek stars in Warehouse 13. A bona fide smash in the US, it airs on SCI FI in its Australian TV premiere on Friday night, March the 5th, at 7.30pm. He plays the curmudgeonly caretaker of the secret facility, and imbues Artie Nielson with a true soul. If you don't know Saul by name, certainly you'll recognise him as one of the world's leading 'that guy's - he was the journalist in Unforgiven, appeared in Wall Street, and was the coke-snorting film producer in True Romance. He was also Daphne Moon's boyfriend Donny Douglas in Frasier and made an impact in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode 'The Most Toys' and Stargate's heartbreaking two-parter, 'Heroes'.

Warehouse 13 is the latest triumph in a career that stretches back 40 years. However, if you think Saul might be some 'fuddy duddy' you couldn't be more wrong - far from it. His experience as an actor and a storyteller transform a regular interview to something akin to a fireside adventure, touching the imagination.

We spoke with him for a while (!), and it wasn't until about a third of the way through that we got to talking about Warehouse 13 - this isn't an interview, per se, but a conversation with a human being who has had a rare and fascinating life, filled with tales, and, dare we say it, wisdom.

If you're an avid internetter, you'll know the average web video only lasts a few minutes. We've taken this chat to the length of an average episode of network television - around 40 minutes. Yes. That is a bit long. We've made it for people who really want to take time out from the 'rush rush rush' and have a genuine rummage through the soul of another person. It's worth it to take the journey. Promise.

We spoke to Saul in his New York apartment - and no, he's not some kind of weird hoarder, trying to replicate the 'Warehouse 13 look' - he's just moved house!

Here's a peek at what you can expect in the interview:

Saul talks about moving to New York and working in Toronto, after originally coming from Toronto. The moment, as a 14 year old, that changed his life.

The twists and turns of his career, of taking the path less travelled, of giving up the things that a 'normal' life entails - waiting until his 40's to have children, for example, and his circle of friends who have lived in the same way.

His story about the very first agent. The lore and history of the character actor in Hollywood. His vast array of skills, as a writer, director and producer - having a play coming out in London in 2011, collaborating with his wife, and Leverage's Timothy Hutton.

The truth about the auditioning process for Warehouse 13. Then he replicates his actual audition! He talks about the entire process of auditioning and the luck involved, rather than the smooth sailing that one reads about.

He talks about why Warehouse 13 has been successful, the rebranding of US SCI FI to Syfy, and the reasons behind that. The fun of doing the show.

On being a 'child' actor, and the process of acting where it becomes as easy as walking and breathing.

On the possibility of directing - and working with Hollywood giants - and the insanity that goes with it - including working with Robert Mitchum.

He also talks about what's coming up in Season 2 of Warehouse 13, which begins shooting in a matter of days.

Then of course, things get a little bit deep - the point of acting and his life, of coming from a childhood that began in a German Jewish refugee camp in 1948. About doing something you love so long that you hate it. About moving from 'family' to 'family'. The secret of how he copes with the pressure of auditions, that you can actually apply to pretty much everything.

Oh, and kids - and parents, due to the frank nature of the interview, there are a few swears from time to time. Hope you don't mind, hope you do enjoy.
