Happy Australia Day - From Mad Max

When it comes to Sci Fi, Australia herself seems to breed/introduce people who enjoy watching it far more than they can make it. That said, there's a long tradition of filmmakers in Australia with the desire to make Sci Fi - and one day, when the reticence of Australian film funding bodies and the excellence and imagination of home-grown talent reaches its tipping point, we will see a flood of original, dynamic Sci Fi movies that will rock the world with their Australian-ness.

Consider, if you will, Daybreakers, a great twist on the vampire myth, coming out in February, created by the Aussie Spierig brothers, and Shane Abbess, who made Gabriel and is poised to create epic Sci Fi in Hollywood. The ray of sunshine that was Farscape, the work of Alex Proyas - these are candles that light the way.

That said, a golden age of Great Southern Land Sci Fi is yet to rise.

So, in the meantime, we salute the work of Dr George Miller, and the one character who could get us through the long dark highway of the soul that is the journey of locally-produced Sci Fi. Let's hope this gem, created from the works of the aforesaid Dr Miller and the genius of Lemmy serves as an inspiration to a generation of filmmakers wondering just how to make Sci Fi in Australia.

It seems - you go onto the backroads of Victoria and with no permits, stars and no budget to speak of, and just go utterly completely MAD. The rest will take care of itself.

Ladies and gentlemen - Mr Max Rockatansky.
