What's On This Week Feb 1 - Feb 7

This week sees the Season 2 finale of Eureka! Make sure you don't miss it, on Thursday at 7.30pm.

SCI FI's great lineup of shows continues, leading up to the big return next week of Sanctuary, on Thursday Feb 11, in a huuuuuge double episode.

Here's the pick of the bunch for this week's SCI FI viewing:

KINGDOM HOSPITAL
Thursday at 8.30pm

Kingdom Hospital is the very latest in modern health technology, inhabited by (sometimes) hard-working doctors, misfits, weirdos, unlucky patients – ghosts!

iPad = iPoo?

The internet has spoken, and it's not as impressed as it wanted to be with the latest release from Apple - the iPad.

The general consensus - it's an overgrown iPhone.

Like the iPhone, it doesn't have a full-blown, Flash-enabled browser, which means that your internet experience isn't going to be as good as when you use a laptop - it's going to be a bit iPhoney.

The 'killer app' for the iPad, is of course, the use of the printed word. It's a direct competitor for Amazon's Kindle, and is sized perfectly for the reading experience.

Sony BraviaVPLVW85 Projector: Dunderhead Review

The VPLVW85 is the top of the home theatre line for Sony projectors, and we thought it necessary and prudent that we have a look at it personally so that you, dear reader, could find out just what it's like for normal people to use it, as opposed to the hard bitten video gadget reviewers who know about things like 'grayscale' and 'gamma'.

If you're with it enough to know all about that stuff, this review won't be too much use, except of course, for a laugh.

Okay, so, first thing we do is open it out of it's box. It's a big box, but doesn't weigh much. The projector comes in at 12 kilos. But there does seem to be a lot of padding…

Happy Australia Day - From Mad Max

When it comes to Sci Fi, Australia herself seems to breed/introduce people who enjoy watching it far more than they can make it. That said, there's a long tradition of filmmakers in Australia with the desire to make Sci Fi - and one day, when the reticence of Australian film funding bodies and the excellence and imagination of home-grown talent reaches its tipping point, we will see a flood of original, dynamic Sci Fi movies that will rock the world with their Australian-ness.

Consider, if you will, Daybreakers, a great twist on the vampire myth, coming out in February, created by the Aussie Spierig brothers, and Shane Abbess, who made Gabriel and is poised to create epic Sci Fi in Hollywood. The ray of sunshine that was Farscape, the work of Alex Proyas - these are candles that light the way.

A Year of Stargate Memorabilia Auctions Starts... Now!

Okay okay okay - if being able to get hold of your very own piece of BSG wasn't enough, get ready to prance about in geeky joy.

Stargate is going on sale!

Not surprisingly, Sci Fi specialty auction house Propworx is behind this Sci Fi auction again. Up for sale - goodies from the sets of Stargate: SG1 and Stargate Atlantis.

Once a week, every week, for the next year, you can check out Propworx's ebay site and attempt to outbid rabid Gaters as you seek to find that little piece of Sci Fi history that says 'you'. Or 'you wit a zat gun'.

It's Official - Avatar Biggest Movie of All Time

Reuters has just announced that Avatar has overtaken Titanic as the biggest box office taker worldwide and in the US. It may or may not have an impact on the upcoming Oscars, where Cameron looks a decent bet to take out the top nod of Best Picture (having clinched best pic and the directing awards at The Golden Globes).

It's weird that Cameron is beating himself as the all-time box office champ. I guess he's now no longer King of the World, but King of The Universe. Or perhaps... Emperor. It's not hard to believe that Palpatine got his start in showbiz...

Battlestar Galactica Auction Finishing Today!

Heads up BSG fans!

An Auction featuring over 400 great items from Battlestar Galactica and “The Plan” will be ending today, Monday the 25th of January (Sydney time). Auctions are set to end every minute or so for the next 400 minutes, which means you still have a chance to get hold of an iconic prop or piece of clothing if you really want to. The Auction will be over about nine and a half hours from now (6pm Monday night, Sydney time).

There are so many great items up, and lots of great deals to be had. Although if you have been to these online auctions before, you'll know that some fans are willing to pay a heck of a lot for BSG memorabilia!

What's On This Week Jan 25-31

If you enjoyed Sunday night's screening of Back To The Future, rest assured that, yes, the rest of the Back To The Future Trilogy will be airing, right here on Sci Fi, every Sunday for the next two weeks!

THE BACK TO THE FUTURE TRILOGY CONTINUES!

Every Sunday, at midday and 10pm.

Sunday, January 31 – BACK TO THE FUTURE II
Sunday, February 7 – BACK TO THE FUTURE III

If you're feeling rather worried about redbacks on the dunny seat, the occasional funnel web in your moccasins, or some other 'Aussie As' killer fauna out to get you this Australia Day, why not sit back and relax on the safety of your own couch and get cosy with some terrors from beyond the realms of the sickest Sci Fi imaginations.

The Aurealis Awards, established in 1995 by Chimaera Publications, the publishers of Aurealis magazine, to recognise the achievements of Australian science fiction, fantasy and horror writers, have been announced for 2009.

The Aurealis Awards were created to complement the Annual Australian National Science Fiction Convention’s Ditmar Awards and the Australian Children’s Book Council Awards.

Here are the full list of the winners of the 2009 Aurealis Awards, check them out if you can, some great authors amongst them!:

Bioshock 2 Looks Good

Bioshock 2 is set to release in Oz on February the 9th. We've been treated to a sneak peek with the game developers from 2K Marin and 2K Australia (based in Canberra, go Aussie!) and we can tell you that if you were a fan of Bioshock, get ready to give birth to an extremely bouncy baby of pure fanboy excitement.

Bioshock 2 is looking good. Very good.

It's a great response to what you'd expect in a sequel - offering you a similar experience, but building on the success of the original with more complex gameplay, yet with a smoother interface. In a sense, Bioshock 2 is easier to play - yet harder to master. You get to revisit the sunken, decayed glory of Rapture with all its delights and horrors, follow a whole new storyline, and, best of all, play as an iconic Big Daddy.
