SCI FI's latest show is a fascinating exploration of the secret society of werewolves, living in a small town in the deeply forested Pacific north west of the United States.
And where would these werewolves be living? Wolf Lake, of course!
The story begins in Seattle, where policeman John Kanin has just asked his girlfriend, Ruby, to move in with him. He wants to be the father of her children. Awww.
Unforch for poor old John, Ruby steps out for 'some Chinese food' and gets into an altercation in her car - the kind of altercation that leaves behind a severed human arm. Icky. But apart from the strange arm, there is neither hide (nor hair!) of Ruby.
John, like all good cops, promptly loses it, heading off on a self-destructive search for his one true love.
Eventually, after months of searching, a strange voice on the phone leads him to Wolf Lake.

It's there he's going to find some answers, and much more than he bargained for!
Wolf Lake is a show that may remind you of a few others, but in many key aspects is highly original, with quirky, dry characters, and a secret lore of werewolves that you've never seen before. Like a colder, more forested True Blood, the things you think you know about werewolves no longer apply - and underneath it all, no matter how much of a monster you are, you're always deeply human. If not a little kooky.
The cast of Wolf Lake is particularly great, with Lou Diamond Phillips from Stargate Universe, Tim Matheson from The West Wing, Graham Greene from Dances With Wolves, Bruce McGill, Sharon Lawrence, Mia Kirshner and Paul Wesley from The Vampire Diaries.

Lou Diamond Phillips as John Kanin
A man on a mission, John Kanin is desperate to track down the love of his life, Ruby. As soon as he lands in town, he can't help thinking that the local people (and even the local police force) are jerking him around. But why would anyone do that?
Tim Matheson as Matthew Donner
The local sheriff has more than enough on his plate, not only dealing with the normal ups and downs of policing a small community, but also the problems of keeping order in a society that he has shunned, with a daughter who's at that age where sneaking out to the lake and hanging out with 'the wrong crowd' makes her a target for real trouble.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Sophia Donner
Sophia is a fifteen year old girl on the cuss of life, dealing with what her over-protective dad demands of her, and what the possibilities that the big bad world has to offer. But is she 'biting off' more than she can chew? Lucky she's made a new friend, John Kanin, who can help her out of a spot of bother. For now.
Graham Greene as Sherman Blackstone
If you want a straight answer, don't come looking for Sherman Blackstone. He's got a wry wit and a way with a quip that seems built to deflate even the biggest ego - and infuriate anyone desperately in need of the truth. But what you think of the truth and what he really knows - they might be two VERY different things. You'll have to admit it though - he IS funny.
Sharon Lawrence as Vivian Cates
The matriarch of the Cates family, she's a 'bitch' who doesn't mind straying outside her pack. But she's loyal in her own way, and just as dangerous as any of the men.

Bruce McGill as Willard Cates
The leader of the business community in Wolf Lake, Willard Cates is in charge of two worlds, but he has more than enough troubles on his plate, what with wife, son and daughter all with their own agenda, seemingly at odds with his own. Then of course, there's his main business rival, a man who likes shady enterprises, and sniffing around where he really doesn't belong.
Mia Kirshner as Ruby Wilder
The mysterious and beautiful Ruby seems to have come to Wolf Lake. But what is she doing there? Why would she come to this strange town in the middle of nowhere and then just disappear off the face of the earth? John Kanin will find out. But when he does, it will be too late. For her - and maybe even for him.
Scott Bairstow as Tyler Creed
Part gangster, part businessman, totally committed to his cause, but feeling he is way, way above the law, he is a pain in the neck for local law enforcement and the local business community. But he has the power and the will to make the town of Wolf Lake his own. Perhaps he will take over - but at what cost?
