"If it has seeds, we can kill it."
Happy Halloween from SCI FI!
Enjoy the black, the orange, and the dressing up in a way that's only slightly different from a trip to Armageddon or Supanova. Feel free to adopt an American holiday as an excuse to dress up and party like it's 1979.
And good luck to those enduring the 'end of school forever Year 12 finally it's all over' exams and taking a much deserved break from the books. Soon, you can put that all behind you, sit back and relax and worry about the joys of University and finding a job. Until then - partaaaaaay!

For those lucky enough to get tickets (even after a 'standby' ticketing regime was put in place) at last night's opening night of the Fantastic Planet Film Festival, this news will come as no surprise.
Last night was brilliant, a mix of party (with drinks in the Dendy Newtown bar before, during and after the screenings), homegrown pride (the premiere of the 'Brazil on Acid' Eraser Children, created by Byron-Bay boy Nathan Christoffel) and the delightfully foreign (Strigoi, the Romanian vampire movie that had the darkly humorous touches and fun soundtrack that one expects from an Emir Kusturica film).
Eraser Children has a blend of styles and influences, from David Lynch, to Ingmar Bergman, to Brazil and other dystopian visions like 1984 and Brave New World, but there's something quite unique about a film that was written on the fly over a period of three years but still manages to retain a sense of story integrity. Created for $20,000, Eraser Children is an impressive, passionate debut that points to big things for all involved. Go Aussie, go!

The ABC (of all people) got the scoop and managed an invite to Dr George Miller's studio, where he showed them the first cars to be built for Mad Max 4: Fury Road. He chatted to them about the long and laborious casting process (no names as yet) and the fact that the vehicles are going to take an entire year to build, mainly because of the amount and complexity of the stunts involved.
The shoot is scheduled for 30 weeks, which is absolutely enormous, definitely the longest, biggest production in Australian history. We'll try to keep you updated as much as possible in what will quite possibly be one of Australia's great SF films. Fingers crossed.

Costas Mandylor has melted the hearts of women across the globe ever since he exploded onto the Hollywood scene in 1991's Mobsters. After continuing his run as a genuine hunk of spunk on Picket Fences, he has embarked on a strange and wonderful career, taking in the very highs and the very lows, working with the very best in the business, and sometimes, the not quite as good.
Recently he's found new vigour in the Saw series, with his recurring character Mark Hoffman, who has joined the Jigsaw killer on a dark and puzzling journey. With the series now up to number Six (and in cinemas for Halloween) it's a testament to his acting skill that they are actually gaining in popularity and profitability, at a time when most series have long run out of steam. Could Saw one day rival the likes of Bond and Star Trek in terms of longevity? - it's not beyond the realms of possibility!

Attention all SCI FI viewers!
Big news. The content will be the same, improving lineup of SCI FI shows, but the address will be slightly different.
From November 15, SCI FI will move from Channel 132 to Channel 125 on your Foxtel/Austar. It's not a big change, but it IS a change. So please prepare mentally to enter the digits, 1,2 and 5 whenever you seek SCI FI.
It fits in quite harmoniously with SCI FI +2, which will be Channel 165.

SCI FI gets SCI +2 in November.
That means if you're too busy skateboarding, or doing your HSC, or having a sit down meal with twelve of your friends, or getting caught up in a dice-rolling argument that just goes on and on when the DM just WON'T choose between the Orc or the Mage, you can catch up on your favourite SCI FI shows, two hours later.
Just think. Hard day at work on Friday? Overtime to get that job done? Success! But, 'oh no!' - you get home fifteen minutes at 8.45pm, missing the crucial opening scenes of Stargate Universe. Never fear. Just go to Channel 165 - SC FI +2, and you can see it at 10.30pm!

Twelve Tricky Questions with Fantastic Planet Film Festival's Director, Dean Bertram.
Q: You have quite an impressive line-up for your first ever Sci Fi Film Fest. How do you convince studio people to screen something like Zombieland?
A: Thanks for your kind words. Everyone at the festival is also very pleased with the line-up for the first year. The same team that run Fantastic Planet have been running A Night of Horror International Film Festival for the past four years, so I think we've reached a stage where we can source some bigger films. That said, we are very fortunate that Sony – the distributors of ZOMBIELAND (screening Saturday October 31, 7:00pm, Dendy Newtown) - are fantastic and so supportive of the genre in Australia. As are Icon, from whom we were able to source the festival's closing night film, the mesmerising steam-punk fantasy FRANKLYN (Friday November 6, 7:00pm, Dendy Newtown).

Thanks to the good people at Paramount, we can share with you some sneak peeks at the good bits of Star Trek - before it's even available in stores. The modern miracle of the internet now makes it's presence felt by allowing people to see video before they can buy it. Who'd a thunk it?
We've got our mitts on some exclusive extras from the upcoming release of Star Trek on DVD and BD on October 29. It's good stuff, really.
It goes without saying (for pretty much all Sci Fi fans) that the new Trek movie is something of an event. To see it in Blu-ray, with extras like tours around beautifully rendered starships, the cut sequences like the Klingon Jail, and The Birth of Spock, makes this a must have. To whet your appetite, here's some good stuff, exclusive to scifitv.com.au, right now.

We've got some great stuff coming up in November, but October still has some life in her yet. Have you entered our SGU competition yet? - win a brand new, Sony HDTV! Seriously, this is a great prize, and you can even win cast-signed SGU posters. For every friend you tell, you get extra entries.
Why yes, I would like a kickass Sony HDTV, thank you very much.
Our Monday Night Movie is The Frighteners, which is a charming supernatural thriller starring Michael J Fox, and directed by Peter Jackson, who has since proven he knows his way around a film set in New Zealand. You may not know that has been working on a remake of The Dambusters, that required several massive scale models of Avro Lancaster bommbers to be built in China, of all places. With production of things like District 9, and the massive, yet-unrealised pre-production of Halo, the Lord of The Rings maestro is proving to be something of a one-man film industry. Travel back in time and enjoy a film made when Peter Jackson was just a director, shooting in New Zealand, on the cusp of very big things indeed.
