Science Fact 1 : Science Fiction 0

The Aurora Borealis - what have they ever done for us?

Us in the Southern Hemisphere that is.

Nothing. As celestial entertainment, they're rubbish. Give us some cool wavy lights in the sky that we can see, already!

Sadly, being stuck in the wrong latitude, the vagaries of solar winds combining with the Earth's magnetic poles and atmosphere is something of a rare sight to those who enjoy 'Christmas in July'. There's only one place you can really see that kind of thing down under, and it's REALLY down under, in Antarctica (can't get more 'downunder' than that, can you?)

But enough waffle. Check out these simply astonishing pictures of the sky above McMurdo.

Not surprising, really, when you consider all the alien (and/or ancient) technology that's buried under the ice. Surely THAT's what's causing this eerie phenomenon?

No? Dammit!

Science Fact 1: Science Fiction 0.

Still good to know that when it comes to 'lights', the Southern Lights are just as good as the Northern Lights. Go Aussie (borealis)!
