Starring Nicolas Cage, Rose Byrne, Ben Mendelssohn
Director Alex Proyas
Rated M
Released Jul 28
Knowing is a film that requires a leap of faith. Literally, and in the spirit of film viewing that Alex Proyas intended. This film is quite complex in its structure - it's a riff on a riff, if you will. What looks to be a creepy 'kid predicts the future' movie turns out to be a whole lot more.
Whilst some of you may have read other reviews online or seen the film, for those who haven't, we won't spoil the fun. Let's just say that a crashing aeroplane is not the biggest explosion in the film.
BOOKS Friday, July 31 by Captain
The world of Sci Fi can really be a world of Sci Fi, and a weird and wonderful world it can be.
Take for example, this picture of a Portuguese edition of 'Hunter of Androids' - or as you and I know it, Blade Runner. Or, as hardcore Phillip K. Dick fans will tell you, 'Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?'
For some reason, the artist seems to have taken the likenesses of Catherine Deneuve and Marlon Brando to portray the main protagonists, turning what is already quite the mindbender into something spectacular.
INTERVIEWS Thursday, July 30 by Captain
David Hewlett needs no introduction to fans of Stargate Atlantis. As the morose, abrasive, insulting and generally loveable Dr Rodney McKay, he has amassed a legion of die-hard fans who see his brilliant yet repulsive character to be one of the unique creations in the Sci FI pantheon. First appearing as a guest character in the SG1 episode ’48 Hours’, the character appeared in seven episodes before becoming one of the team members on the spin off, Stargate Atlantis. Since then the ‘geek’s geek’ has stepped out from beyond the lab and become more than just a guy with the brain the size of a planet - a fighter, a hero, and, most surprisingly, a lover.

In any case - you can decide for yourself, and get a glimpse of what it's like at Comic Con with this footage.
INTERVIEWS Wednesday, July 29 by Captain
Dave Gibbons is the man who made Watchmen a reality. When he and co-creator Alan Moore created their series of comics in the early 80's, they had no idea that their take on what would happen if super heroes were 'real' would literally change the way people not only looked at comic book superheroes, but created them as well.
A quarter of a decade later, the graphic novel has been made into a blockbuster by Zack Snyder, the director of 300. Wowing hard-core comic book fans and newcomers alike, the film was a richly intricate and extremely faithful rendition of the comic book, with a structure and a style that was not designed for the lowest common denominator - certainly a classic moment for geeks everywhere who lament good ideas told in a way that tries to popularize them (ie dumbed down). The box office may have suffered, but creatively, a triumph.
GADGETS Wednesday, July 29 by Captain
Sounds rude, doesn't it. But it's not. Too long have mobile phone earpieces been the purview of upper middle management types who drive cheap BMW's and seem to enjoy doing nothing more than to talk loudly in bank queues.
But those days are over. The bluetooth earpiece has just been revolutionized by Hybra Advance Technology Inc. and AbsolutelyNew Inc. It's a fully working Bluetooth earpiece that can be worn stylishly (yes, stylishly) on the ear, or, even better, as a ring! It even comes in different ring sizes!
NEWS Tuesday, July 28 by Captain
As the anouncement that the beloved David Tennant would hand over the keys to the Tardis to newcomer Matt Smith sent ripples through our timeline, speculation soon began: what would this big haired whippersnapper be like as the Doctor?
Well, we can't speak on the results as yet (as the new series will not be airing for a while) but we can give you a sneak peek at what the new Doctor Who looks like.
His outfit has been described in some circles as scientist chic, or even geek chic. Although when you're describing The Doctor, that would seem to cover most of his incarnations. Fans looking for a sharp change of direction into snug leatherwear will have to remain disappointed.

SCI FI Wire has reported on the latest Peter Jackson news from San Diego Comic Con.
During Friday's Comic-Con panel for the upcoming alien internment drama District 9 (more about that awesomeness soon!) Peter Jackson responded to questions about the upcoming Hobbit movies, based on the prequel to The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit. As you may remember, it's being directed by Guillermo (Pan's Labyrinth) Del Toro.
Here's what Sci Fi Wire had to say:
"We are doing two movies, just to clarify," Jackson said in his first-ever in-person Comic-Con appearance. " you're probably going to want to know that Bilbo Baggins is going to be played by, ... and I think he's really going to be good," he said, deliberately garbling the microphone as he mentioned the supposed casting choice. "No, I just thought before we got started, I'd give you a little bit of an update on The Hobbit. Because everything's a process, a pipeline, we're about three or four weeks away from delivering our first draft of the script of the first movie to Warner Brothers."

DVD
Out July 29
The final season of Stargate Atlantis is a bittersweet offering. Giving us the fullest flower of character interaction, plenty of action, humour and Sci Fi craziness, this is Atlantis at its best. Unfortunately, it's also Atlantis at its last. For fans of the show, this DVD is a must have.
With Amanda Tapping exiting after Season 4 to concentrate on her new hit show, Sanctuary (on now on SCI FI!), the leadership of Atlantis passed onto Robert Picardo's character, Woolsey. Woolsey's obnoxious 'rules man' from the IOA (International Oversight Advisory) seemed like a fatal choice for the show dynamic, but in fact turned to be a stroke of genius. Conflict outside Atlantis base and conflict within provided an energetic story motif to many of Season 5's episodes, and quite a few sparks of humour created with Woolsey's 'new kid in school' routine.
