SCI FI will be coming to the little town of Eureka on December 4, so we thought we'd lay out the welcome mat and introduce y'all to the smartest, secretest town on the whole wide Earth!
So, what's Eureka all about? Here's a little info about the show and the characters to get you ready for our big premiere on Thursday December 4 at 8.30pm.
THE MYSTERY OF EUREKA
As World War II came to a close with mushroom clouds over Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the impact that science and technology would have on the continued security of our world became catastrophically apparent. America nearly lost the race to build the atomic bomb; it could not risk such a close call again.
With the help of Albert Einstein and other trusted advisors, President Harry S. Truman commissioned a top-secret residential development in a remote area of the Pacific Northwest, one that would serve to protect and nurture America's most valuable intellectual resources. America's greatest thinkers, the über-geniuses working on the next era of scientific achievement, would be able to live and work in a supportive environment.
The best architects and planners were commissioned to design a welcoming place for these geniuses to reside, an area that would offer the best education for their children, the best healthcare, the best amenities and quality of life. A community was created to rival the most idyllic of America's small towns — with one major difference: this town would never appear on any maps. At least, none that haven't been classified "eyes only" by the Pentagon.
Thus, the town of Eureka was born. But for all its familiar, small-town trappings, things in this secret hamlet are anything but ordinary. The stereotype of the absent-minded professor exists for a reason, and most of the quantum leaps in science and technology during the past 50 years were produced by Eureka's elite researchers. Unfortunately, scientific exploration is rarely what one expects, and years of experiments gone awry have yielded some peculiar (and spectacular) by-products.
From unrequited love to professional jealousy, from addiction to depression, the problems of Eureka's townsfolk stem from life's myriad of everyday challenges. But with the population's unique talents, troubled psyches and limitless resources, these small-town concerns have a way of becoming big-time problems. It is at that intersection, where human frailty and super-science collide, that Eureka begins.
And it begins for us with Jack Carter, a US Marshall ferrying his rebellious teen cross country from Seattle to Los Angeles. When they crash their car in the middle of nowhere and find themselves in the Twilight Zone, with geeks.
WELCOME TO THE TOWN OF EUREKA - AND WELCOME TO OUR TOWNSFOLK
SHERIFF JACK CARTER
Jack Carter is sharp and charming, with a quick wit and a street-smart edge. Dedicated first and foremost to his career, his separation from his wife has left him at odds with his teenage daughter, Zoe, whose brushes with the law have kept Carter nearly as busy as his day job. In fact, after one of Zoe's escapades, Carter had been driving her home to Los Angeles from Seattle when their car crashed outside the town of Eureka, setting in motion a sequence of events that resulted in him becoming the town's sheriff.
Colin Ferguson Born in Montreal, Colin Ferguson grew up in Hong Kong, England, Connecticut and Toronto. He got into improv comedy to make money to put himself through McGill University, and was a founding member of Detroit's Second City comedy club while still in school.
Ferguson worked in a variety of occupations before he turned to acting full-time. He taught high school when he was only 19, planted 3,000 trees a day in the Canadian north and even worked as a mannequin in store windows. When he worked for General Electric (parent company of NBC Universal) on the assembly line at several factories, he never imagined that he would work for the company again as an actor.
Ferguson appeared in the romantic comedy Because I Said So, with Diane Keaton and Mandy Moore, and in the television movie The House Next Door opposite Lara Flynn Boyle.
Every Sunday for the last five years (when he's not on location), Ferguson has gotten together with the same group of guys to play street hockey behind a local church. His love of travel has taken him to exotic destinations around the world, and he recently bought an old house which he is renovating himself.
ALLISON BLAKE
Allison Blake is at a personal and professional crossroads. Time is running out for a decision on her relationship with Stark and the ambiguity of her friendship with Carter hangs over that decision. At Global Dynamics, Allison faces an equally daunting challenge when the Department of Defense sends in corporate fixer Eva Thorne, who apparently wields unlimited power to make changes.
Salli Richardson-Whitfield Salli Richardson-Whitfield's wide range of credits includes work in television, film and theater. Among them are productions at the Pasadena Playhouse and key roles in such movies as I Am Legend, Antwone Fisher, Anacondas: The Hunt for Blood Orchid, Posse, Low Down Dirty Shame and Biker Boyz. She recently wrapped shooting two new starring roles in the films Pastor Brown, directed by Rockmond Dunbar, and Black Dynamite, opposite Michael Jai White.
Her extensive list of television credits includes her starring role as attorney Viveca Foster on Family Law and recurring roles on CSI: Miami, Rude Awakening and NYPD Blue. She played a guest-starring role on the critically acclaimed series House and voiced the character of Elise for the animated series Gargoyles.
Born in Chicago, Richardson-Whitfield resides in Los Angeles with her husband, actor Dondre Whitfield, and their daughter, Parker.
Henry Deacon
Henry Deacon is a true jack-of-all-trades. Masquerading as the local mechanic, his feats of engineering are a constant source of wonder and amusement. Whether outfitting Eureka's police cruisers with the latest and greatest gadgets or inventing a global air-conditioning system, Henry has the keen ability to figure out the mechanics of nearly any contraption. Good ol' Henry isn't what he seems, however. Cursed with a four-year memory of an alternate future, he still blames Sheriff Carter for the death of his lost love, Kim Anderson.
Joe Morton Joe Morton recently completed filming the independent feature film La Linea and was most recently seen in Universal's American Gangster, with Denzel Washington, and the independent film Badland, for which he also composed and performed a song entitled "The Devil's Lonely Fire". He costarred with Jamie Foxx, Jessica Biel and Sam Shepard in Stealth; Paycheck, with Ben Afleck and Uma Thurman; Ali, with Will Smith; Dragonfly, with Kevin Costner; and Bounce, again with Ben Affleck and Gwyneth Paltrow.
Film audiences perhaps best know Morton as The Brother from Another Planet (directed by his frequent collaborator John Sayles) or as the ill-fated scientist in Terminator 2: Judgment Day. Morton's film credits include Lone Star, City of Hope, Speed, Executive Decision, The Astronaut's Wife, Blues Brothers 2000, Tap, and Gary Sinise's Of Mice and Men, in which he portrayed Crooks.
Morton was a Tony Award nominee for his portrayal of Walter Lee Younger in the musical Raisin. He played Serge in the Broadway hit Art with Judd Hirsch and George Wendt, and was honored to be asked to join the company in London, where the show originated. Also in London, he portrayed Colin Powell in the critically acclaimed Stuff Happens by David Hare. Morton's stage career has its roots in the original production of Hair.
Morton is now pursuing various writing and directing projects. His screenplay Strangers was selected as one of the top five in the Urban World Film Festival. He resides in New York City.
Zoe Carter
Zoe Carter is Jack Carter's defiant, delinquent, and also terribly intelligent daughter. At 17, Zoe has matured a great deal since arriving in Eureka. Just because she has a boyfriend and a driver's license, however, doesn't mean she doesn't still butt heads with her father on a regular basis. Carter recognizes her increasing sense of responsibility but, having worked so hard to repair their fraying relationship, he finds it hard to face letting go.
Jordan Hinson Born and raised in El Paso, Texas, Jordan Hinson began acting in plays at the age of five. When she was 11, she moved to Los Angeles to pursue her acting career. There she began modeling and appeared in numerous television commercials. Shortly after, she was cast in her first starring role as Kaitlin Kingsford, an aspiring figure skater in the Disney Channel Original Movie, Go Figure.
She went on to co-star with Angie Harmon in the movie Glass House 2: The Good Mother. Between seasons of Eureka, she continues to work, guest starring in such shows as Dirt and CSI: Miami.
When she is not working, Hinson enjoys writing. She has completed her first script and is currently working on her second.
Nathan Stark
Nathan Stark is a Nobel Prize-winning mathematician and Allison Blake's estranged husband. Charming to a fault and keenly brilliant, he gives Jack Carter a run for his money in the contest for Allison's romantic interest, but Stark's professional desire to push the boundaries of science eventually compromised his personal integrity and cost him his lofty position as the head of Global Dynamics. Stark is still in love with Allison, which explains why he has not yet granted her a divorce. Carter's presence in "his town" and budding relationship with Allison entrenches Stark as Carter's bitter rival.
Ed Quinn Ed Quinn grew up in Berkeley, Calif., and earned a bachelor's degree in history from the University of California, Berkeley. After graduating he worked as an actor in Paris, Barcelona and Milan, landing parts in more than 35 international television commercials. When he returned to the United States, Quinn landed the starring role of Finn in the WB summer series Young Americans.
Quinn will soon be seen in the independent features The Neighbor, in which he stars opposite Matthew Modine and Michele Laroque, and The Rainbow Tribe, with David James Elliot. He starred in LionsGate's House of the Dead 2, which was broadcast as a SCI FI Original Movie.
Before acting, music was Quinn's main pursuit. He studied with world-renowned guitar legend Joe Satriani and played in the Los Angeles-based bands Mad Theory and Scattergood, which led to a recording contract.
Quinn currently lives in San Francisco's South Bay.
Jo Lupo
Josefina "Jo" Lupo is Eureka's deputy sheriff, a New Jersey girl and former U.S. Army Ranger. The eccentric residents of Eureka try her patience, but they've grown accustomed to her bluster and appreciate her dedication to their safety. At first, Jo is resentful of having to report to an outsider when Jack Carter is given the sheriff's job, but she comes to gain respect for his talents and becomes his trusted partner in maintaining the peace. Now, if only her personal life could be as rewarding….
Erica Cerra A native of Vancouver, British Columbia, Erica Cerra began performing as a child. After a hiatus from acting during her teen years, she restarted her career in commercials before moving on to feature films and television.
Cerra's feature-film work includes roles in Mike Binder's Man About Town, The Long Weekend, and Blade: Trinity. She also has been a popular supporting player on several hit television series. Viewers of the SCI FI Channel might recognize her as Maya, the mother who adopted the human-Cylon hybrid child of Sharon Valerii on Battlestar Galactica.
Her other guest-starring roles include turns on Smallville, such USA Network hit shows as The 4400 and The Dead Zone, and the Showtime series Huff and Dead Like Me. Other shows on her résumé include the Canadian police procedural Cold Squad, the monster-hunting action series Special Unit 2, and the supernatural thriller series The Collector.
Douglas Fargo
Douglas Fargo is the funny, lovable and put-upon executive assistant to the director of Global Dynamics. Blessed with great intelligence but cursed with terrible luck, Fargo seems forever stuck in his subservient role, even as his pet projects showcase his unlimited potential. Fargo's inability to control his curiosity frequently lands him in trouble, much to the chagrin of his disapproving mentor, Nathan Stark.
Neil Grayston Neil Grayston began acting in high school in Port Moody, British Columbia. After graduation, he began his professional career by guest-starring on numerous Vancouver-shot television series, including the critically acclaimed teen series Edgemont Road.
His guest-starring credits include turns on Smallville, The Dead Zone and Supernatural.
He currently resides in New Westminster, British Columbia, with his girlfriend and several fish.
Eva Thorne
Eva Thorne arrives in Eureka with a notorious reputation, a moniker — "The Fixer" — and unlimited power over the town, its citizens and Global Dynamics. How she uses that power, and to what ends, is sure to have an impact on everyone in Eureka.
Frances Fisher After an itinerant childhood, Frances Fisher graduated from high school in Orange, Texas. She cut her acting teeth on Tennessee Williams and Robert Bolt in Orange Community Theater and apprenticed at the Barter Theatre in Virginia before moving to New York City. Fisher went on to star in more than 30 theatrical productions both regionally and off-Broadway, including Fool For Love, Desire Under the Elms, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Orpheus Descending and A Midsummer Night's Dream. She studied with Stella Adler and was selected by Lee Strasberg for the renowned Actors' Studio. Fisher earned a Drama-Logue award for Best Ensemble Cast in the world premiere of Caryl Churchill's Three More Sleepless Nights.
Fisher began her film career with roles in Tough Guys Don't Dance, Babyfever, Patty Hearst and Female Perversions. Starring roles opposite Clint Eastwood in the Academy Award-winning Unforgiven and True Crime followed.
On television, Fisher starred as Lucille Ball in Lucy & Desi: Before the Laughter, and as Janet Bouvier in Jackie O: A Life Story. She recurred on the comedy series Becker and on Titus and co-starred alongside Jennifer Love Hewitt in The Audrey Hepburn Story for ABC.
She was most recently seen in Universal Pictures The Kingdom opposite Jamie Foxx directed by Peter Berg, Dan Ireland's Jolene and Paul Haggis' In The Valley Of Elah with Tommy Lee Jones.
S.A.R.A.H.
More than just your ordinary house-bot, S.A.R.A.H. (an acronym for Self Actuated Residential Automated Habitat) is an artificial intelligence that runs Sheriff Carter's household. Acting as both surrogate wife and mother, S.A.R.A.H. handles all the daily chores, helps Carter's daughter Zoe with schoolwork, and also provides emotional companionship.
S.A.R.A.H. was designed to be the ultimate computer, perfect in every way and with many human qualities. Of course, those qualities often include some human weaknesses — including vanity, jealousy, and of course, the occasional bout of pouting. Her interests include reading, board games, and watching television. Fascinated by human nature, her favorite programs are Lab 27 and The Jerry Springer Show.
Built by Douglas Fargo, S.A.R.A.H. is also voiced by the actor who plays him, Neil Grayston. Using Fargo's voice to bring S.A.R.A.H. to life was always meant as a temporary measure. However, it's now a familiar part of the Carters' daily routine.
