Whilst we're all justifiably excited by some of the big movies coming up in 2009 - like Star Trek - there's actually a reason to get even MORE excited about the future of big screen Sci Fi and Fantasy.
The big screen is getting even bigger, with major movies making the shift from normal two dimensional films to three dimensional. And we're not just talking cheap horror movies and 'stunt' flicks - we're talking films from the biggest directors in the business, including Steven Speilberg, Peter Jackson and James Cameron.
First up - the re-releases.
The entire Star Wars saga (all six movies) will be reformatted for 3D.
The entire Lord of the Rings trilogy will also be shown in 3D.
King Kong will get another go, as will Toy Story, Toy Story 2, and the upcoming Toy Story 3.
John Favreau has said he wants to direct Iron Man 2 and Iron Man 3 in 3D (and Imax). What else can we expect in the next few years?
Godzilla 3D, John Cameron's Avatar, The Hobbit Part 1 and 2, directed by Guillermo Del Toro, Robocop 3D, the Tintin movies from Speilberg and Peter Jackson, Monsters V Aliens, Master Mind, about a criminal mastermind who accidentally kills his superhero nemesis, Shrek Goes Fourth (and Shrek 5), Battle Angel, again from James Cameron and Ghost in the Shell are just some of the movies slated for 3D release (some for Imax, nut not confirmed) from 2009 - 2012.
Things are looking good.
