One of the most shocking announcements in recent Sci Fi movie history was that Keanu Reeves was appearing in a remake of one of the greatest Sci Fi films of all time, The Day The Earth Stood Still.
First off it was dismissed as a joke, then as a bad Hollywood joke, and then as a symptom of the remake-itis that has never really slowed down and will never ever stop.
But wait. The trailer is here. And it looks pretty good! Hang on - really good!
Alongside Reeves, TDESS (as we'll shorten it to) stars Jennifer Connelly, and Kathy Bates, who are both Oscar-winners. And, given its heavy 'end of the world' images, it has the bonus of not being directed by Roland Emmerich!
It's directed by Scott Derrickson, who wrote and directed the critically acclaimed The Exorcism of Emily Rose, and written by David Scarpa, who wrote the tense military prison drama, The Last Castle, starring Robert Redford and James Gandolfini.
Given the immense esteem that the original is held, one can only imagine that this new version has been looked after by the powers that be. Or cross the fingers tightly.
So far the tone and content look like something a little bit special, a little bit grown up and with crystal clear 'save the planet or you're doomed' message. Gort also makes an appearance. And he doesn't look happy.
It releases worldwide, December 26.
