In what looks to be the most epic computer game ever, Spore takes you from single celled organism to space faring culture - one of the titles bandied about for it was 'Sim Everything' - so you get some idea of the massive scope of this 'massively single-player online game'
We've got our hands on some pics of the 'Cell Stage', the first in the Spore universe. Cell Stage is your introduction to the fundamentals of Spore. You play a simple organism which is dropped onto your planet by way of meteor. As you do.

The stage takes place in a top-down 2-D environment and you can play as either herbivore, carnivore, or omnivore. You earn DNA (of course!) and collect parts to improve your creature’s abilities. Make your choices wisely - even as a lowly simple organism, your choices and actions will have long lasting effects. Long lasting!

Avoid larger, carnivorous organisms while feeding on smaller organisms or algae – all while being tossed around in strong ocean currents. Eventually you will grow large enough to sprout legs and crawl out of the water and up onto land.
The rest of game goes like this - Cell, Creature, Tribal, Civilization and then Space. Each stage has a unique feel, and have been likened (roughly) to:
Cell = Pacman
Creature= Diablo
Tribal=Populous
Civilization= Sim City, Civilization
Space=Masters of Orion, Destroy All Humans!, SimEarth.
How awesome does this sound?

Twitchy gamer fingers be still, Spore will be released in September.
