What Is That Piano Music From Battlestar Galactica Season 2?

Whilst the music of Battlestar Galactica has always been some of the most emotional and often startling in Sci FI (say, for example, the solo drum and voice track from the original miniseries) this all seems like nothing compared to the reaction that we get from the piano piece that will be playing in Season 2's first episodes.

If you're not sure which particular haunting piece of piano playing we're talking about, check out the BSG S2 trailer on SCI FI's home page.

Well, what the hell is it?

What's On This Week Jan 28 - Feb 3

By any standards, this week is a big week on SCI FI.

On Tuesday the 29th, 7.35pm, the final episode of Afterworld will screen. The end of an epic journey in both storytelling and cross media entertainment will mark the final note in Russell's less than excellent adventure. For those who've become die-hard fans through daily updates (or even podcasts) it'll be huge.

On Wednesday the 30th, 10.30pm, it's the SCI FI premiere of Battlestar Galactica Season 2. Those who have been crying, nay, screaming, out for more Battlestar Galactica can finally rejoice in more episodes. With recent announcements that BSG will only run 4 Seasons in entirety (proving, once and for all, that there is no God, for a universe with a benevolent supreme being would surely have at least 11 seasons of BSG (and SG1!)), it means that the BSG viewing process must, for hardcore fans, be tuned to the 'savouring' frequency. And of course we know we won't have to wait that long to see if they get to Earth or not. And if Earth is merely populated by Cylons. But I digress.

Created from the bones of a Philip K.Dick short story, The Golden Man, Next is the story of Cris Johnson (Nic Cage), ostensibly a two-bit magician in Las Vegas. Secretly however, he is hiding in plain sight - he has the magical ability to see into the future - but only two minutes into the future, and only two minutes into his own future.

Proper Space Ships Ready For Blast Off!

Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic has unveiled models of the new SpaceShipTwo, the craft that will take six passengers (at $USD 200,000 a pop) and two crew into space for five minutes at a time.

Test flights for the new craft are slated for this year.

The plan is simple – the whole kit and caboodle will fly to 15 kilometres up into the air. 747’s currently cruise at around 10 kilometres up. Then SpaceShipTwo will separate from Knight Two and blast off into space –just under the legal orbiting limit where it becomes hard to come back down without re-entry shields, retro rockets et al.

Optus Wireless Broadband – Roamer Usb Review

In this day and age of either hyper-complex gadgets or anyone, even a Hilton, can use it toys, new technology can either be a godsend or yet another thing to do in an already overly busy world. With all the fuss about broadband and the slow and inexorable build up of hatred for Telstra and their ‘line fees’, it seems only natural that a market should open up for mobile broadband. The nice people at Optus have a new dongle, which they call the Roamer USB.

But is it to be trusted? Can it actually work? Is it really plug and play?

Ledger's Last Entry - The Dark Knight

Whilst the shock of Heath Ledger's sudden demise at his New York residence on Broome St begins to subside, the inevitable (if possibly heartless) question arises - will this affect The Dark Knight?

Sources at Warner Bros have made assurances that principal photography has been completed, so no and yes. Obviously the ongoing character of The Joker will have to be re-cast for any future Batman films, and any 'pickups' or extra scenes are going to be tricky. That said, the film (and Ledger's excellent performance) is in the can, so die-hard Bat-fans can Bat-relax and look forward to the film's release in May.

RYAN ADAMS AND DAVID GRANT, THE PRODUCERS BEHIND THE HD REMASTERING OF STAR TREK: THE ORIGINAL SERIES, SEASON 1, SPEAK TO SCI FI PI ABOUT BRINGING A 24th CENTURY CLASSIC INTO THE 21ST CENTURY!

Ryan Adams, Consulting Producer and David Grant, Executive Director of Television Mastering at CBS/Paramount, have been working together there for almost five years, remastering classic film onto the new HD format.

It’s often painstaking work, but it also involves the thrill of going back to the original celluloid, shot decades earlier. Sci Fi spoke to the men at the coal face of the most exciting revolution in Hi Def viewing, about what it was like to transform one of Sci Fi’s great marques, and what we can expect from them (and Star Trek) in the future.

Paper Plane To Be Launched From Space

No, that heading is not a typo.

Website Boing Boing has announced plans by the Japanese team on the International Space Station to launch a paper aeroplane (co-designed with the Japan Origami Airplane Association) into the Earth's atmosphere.

Before you go saying that's silly and impossible, the paper is being treated with heat resistant materials. So it's not impossible. Just very, very silly.

Research began on January the 17th in in an ultra-high-speed wind tunnel at the University of Tokyo’s Okashiwa campus. The 8 centimetre long aircraft will be subjected to wind speeds of 8,600 kilometres an hour. That's also not a typo. They're pushing that baby to Mach 7!

What's On This Week Jan 21 - 28

There comes a time in every channel's life that you have to stop and listen and smell the event horizon. SCI FI is proud to announce that it is indeed the kind of channel that stops and listens, and as a stopping and listening channel, has responded to a blizzard of calls for Stargate:Season 9 by in fact putting it on the air.

Tune in to SCI FI this Friday the 25th, 7.30pm, and you will see the season that brings in the Ori, lead by none other than the Warlock (and for fans of A Room With A View, George Emerson!) Julian Sands.

Family Guy's Blue Harvest Trailer
