Looks like it’s going to be a very Merry Christmas for everyone who gets a chance to find a couch and digest quietly (unlike, say, anyone in the Saarlac pit) – because there’s plenty of excellent Sci Fi to go around – especially if you like Star Trek! It’s an Original Crew Merry Movie Marathon this Christmas.
Late on Christmas Eve, (10.35 PM) catch Star Trek: The Motion Picture, the epic movie that brought Star Trek to the big screen in a big way. Groundbreaking special effects, a fascinating story and for the super Star Trek geeks, the birth of The Borg (although you’ll have to figure that one out for yourselves).
With perfect timing for those who’ve opened their presents and are waiting for the rellies to show up, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn screens on Christmas Day at 11am. This is one if the very best of the Star Trek movies and has some of the great Star Trek lines. Not for people who have phobias about insects getting into their ears! If you haven’t seen it, hang onto your non-existent space seatbelts – it’s one heck of a ride.
Boxing Day has Star Trek III: The Search for Spock screening at 11am and 10.35 pm – with Kirk and crew going crazy, tooling about in Klingon birds of prey and upsetting Starfleet – all because of a crazy hunch about their dead friend Spock.
On Dec 27 it’s same times, but of course, it’s Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, set directly after III, the crew of the Enterprise sling shot past the sun and head back to a strange new world – 1986! The funniest Star Trek romp sees the crew trying to save the earth whilst not disturbing too many locals – remember to ask for ‘nukulah wessels’.
Next day, Dec 28, it’s Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, and it’s William Shatner’s turn in the director’s chair – with dubious, but often highly entertaining results as the Enterprise gets hijacked (again!) in a mad mission to literally meet God.
